Arch Manning Is Now At Center Of Texas' Biggest Debate

Arch Manning's inconsistent performance raises questions about the Texas Longhorns' offensive strategy after their decisive loss to Oklahoma.

Texas’ first loss of the season came with a nasty twist, and Arch Manning is back at the center of the conversation.

The Longhorns dropped the Red River Rivalry to Oklahoma on a late-second field goal, and the game turned sharply on Manning’s fourth-quarter mistakes. He threw two interceptions in the final quarter, giving the Sooners the opening they needed to leave with the win.

That said, the loss was not only on Manning. A lot of the frustration has also landed on Steve Sarkisian’s play-calling, with many believing the Texas quarterback has not been put in the best spots. Still, Manning is the name everybody will circle after a game like this, especially because the expectations around him entering the season were so high.

There were positives early. Manning played solid football in the first half and connected on a deep touchdown to Cam Coleman, a throw that felt like it could have changed the tone of the game and hinted at a bigger connection between the two.

Instead, the finish unraveled. Manning completed just three of his final six passes, and the last sequence ended with an interception that handed Oklahoma prime field position for the game-winning kick.

This wasn’t Manning’s first clutch chance of the year, either. He already has one big-time drive on his résumé this season against Ohio State, but this one had the feel of a defining moment that slipped away.

The numbers also show where Texas had trouble helping him. Manning went 5 for 11 on passes outside the numbers, and both of those throws were picked off. Inside the numbers, though, he was far more effective: 14 for 16 for 217 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns.

That split says plenty. When Manning worked the middle of the field, he looked comfortable and in rhythm, including a pro-level throw to Ryan Wingo over the middle. When the offense pushed him outside the numbers, the strain showed.

Manning still has to become more efficient, and that part is not in question. But this season has already reached a difficult stretch for him, and after this loss, the noise around him is only going to get louder.

Texas Just Learned How Costly That Red River Loss Really Was

The Red River loss to Oklahoma did more than just knock Texas out of the win column. A 47-yard kick by Tate Sandell sealed the 27-24 defeat and ended the Longhorns four-week run at No. 1 in the AP Poll, a stretch that had given the program some early-season breathing room at the top.

The fallout was just as jarring as the finish. Texas dropped to No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll, and with several other top-25 teams also stumbling over the week, the rankings shuffled around the Longhorns in a way that makes the defeat look even costlier in hindsight. Texas Suddenly Has A Coaching Question Fans Cant Ignore

Texas left the Red River Rivalry with more than a frustrating 27-24 loss to unranked Oklahoma. The Longhorns were undone by a messy special teams performance, highlighted by a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and a missed late field goal, while the offense also had trouble sustaining drives and converting on third down.

Steve Sarkisian was asked afterward whether the special teams operation needs to be re-evaluated, a question that can linger when a game turns on hidden-yardage mistakes. For a Texas team with bigger goals, the concern now is not just the loss itself, but whether one phase of the game has become too costly to keep overlooking. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Needs Arch Manning To Answer One Big Question Fast

Both Florida and Texas took a hit in Week 6, and the AP Poll reflected it after losses that only sharpened the scrutiny on two teams still trying to prove they belong in the College Football Playoff conversation. For Texas, the focus keeps circling back to Arch Manning, whose season has already included flashes of the player the Longhorns believe he can become, along with uneven stretches that have made every snap feel more revealing than the last.

The recent loss to Oklahoma only raised the stakes, with Manning throwing two interceptions in a game that underscored how quickly the margin for error can disappear. Now the Longhorns head into a matchup with Florida facing a simple but urgent question: can Manning steady the offense fast enough to restore momentum, or will Texas keep leaving the door open in a race where every setback matters?
