Peyton Manning’s loyalties are getting a lot of attention ahead of Texas-Tennessee, and the answer, according to a resurfaced June interview, is not much of a mystery to him.
Manning, a Tennessee icon who still stays closely tied to the program, made clear where he stands when his nephew, Arch Manning, takes the field for Texas. Speaking with Locked on SEC’s Chris Gordy on June 26, Manning called it a “no-brainer” and said family comes first.
“One of the kids was asking me earlier who I was going to go for. I said, who do you think?”

And I went, well, you and I are different. You and I are wired differently.
Nothing is more important than your family.
“But obviously it's going to be a huge SEC game. ... I love my university, my alma mater, and pull for them unconditionally, but nothing is more important to me than my family,” Manning continued.
“And when you have a nephew playing, I pull very hard for him every single Saturday. So, that's pretty much a no-brainer that you're pulling for your nephew to play well.”
Manning also made it clear that this isn’t a permanent shift away from Tennessee. Once Texas leaves Knoxville, he expects to be back in his usual role backing the Vols.
“But like I said, everybody knows pretty strongly where my loyalties lie on all other Saturdays at the University of Tennessee,” Manning added.
The discussion around Manning’s rooting interest is entertaining for fans, but it doesn’t change the main issue for Texas: how Arch Manning handles a tough road setting. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian brushed off the family angle when asked about it.
“Honestly, I don't think he's gonna care too much about that,” Sarkisian noted, per CBS Sports. “Don't take anything away from Peyton. I don't think he's thought much about how he's playing at Tennessee.
“I'm sure it'll be a cool moment for the family. I don't think Arch cares that much. I think he cares about playing really good for his teammates and being connected with his team.”
As for Peyton Manning’s outfit on game day, that may be the other small detail fans watch closely. He usually shows up in Tennessee’s orange, but for this one, he may have to swap it for burnt orange.
