Tony Romo’s weekend took a sharp turn after his arrest in Milwaukee, and the fallout hit fast.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS analyst was booked Thursday night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after police pulled him over on Interstate 43. Authorities said Romo “performed poorly” on field sobriety tests before being taken into custody in Milwaukee County and later released.
The arrest immediately affected his plans on the golf side. Romo had been set to play in the 56th M&P Group Texas State Open, but Cascades Country Club confirmed Sunday that he will no longer take part. Organizers also scrapped a live Q&A session that had been scheduled for Monday morning.
The off-field issue now lands in the middle of a busy stretch for Romo, who signed a record-setting extension with CBS Sports in February 2020. The deal pays him $17 million per year over 10 years, a total of $180 million, to remain the network’s lead NFL analyst alongside Jim Nantz.
For now, Romo is still expected to be in the CBS booth with Nantz for Week 1 in September. By then, the arrest may have faded into the background.
Romo’s mug shot only added to the attention around the case, which is now working its way through the usual legal process.
As a player, Romo spent 13 seasons with the Cowboys and finished with 34,183 passing yards. He was undrafted, but still built a career that counted as a success even if the playoff results never matched the regular-season production.
