Texas A&M Targets Rising 2027 Cornerback After Key January Visits

With momentum building around an already talented 2027 defensive back class, Texas A&M is making a strong push for a rising in-state cornerback who's drawing increasing national attention.

Texas A&M is already making serious moves in building its 2027 recruiting class, and the Aggies are doing it with a clear sense of direction under head coach Mike Elko. Despite some weather-related setbacks that have slowed down campus visits, the staff hasn’t taken its foot off the gas. Elko and his coordinators have been hitting the road hard in January, locking in on a handful of key targets who could define the future of the program.

At the top of that list is four-star quarterback commit Jayce Johnson, who’s been steadily climbing the national radar. Offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill recently made the trip to see Johnson in person, a strong signal that he’s a foundational piece of what A&M is building.

But the Aggies aren’t stopping there. They’re also keeping close tabs on the top-ranked player in the 2027 class, five-star cornerback John Meredith, and fellow five-star corner Joshua Dobson. Both are elite talents with game-changing potential, and A&M is positioning itself squarely in the mix for their commitments.

Another name to watch is Trenton Blaylock, a three-star cornerback out of Houston’s Atascocita High School. His stock is rising, and so is the competition for his signature.

Blaylock recently named Vanderbilt, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Texas A&M as the schools pushing hardest for him, with Vanderbilt currently holding the edge. But don’t count out the Aggies just yet.

Elko’s track record with defensive backs is one of the strongest calling cards in his pitch, and he’s putting in the work to make that known. With campus visits on hold due to weather, Elko made the trip himself to see Blaylock at his high school - a move that clearly resonated with the young corner.

“They’ve been recruiting me heavily these past couple of weeks, especially,” Blaylock said. “What they’ve done is come back-to-back weeks to sit down and talk to me, and that definitely means a lot to me.

They also just told me a lot about A&M as a whole and to sit down in front of a guy like Coach Elko and him taking time to be with me just shows how much of a priority I am. They want me to commit soon and be a part of the best overall DB class in Texas A&M history, so that definitely intrigued me.”

That message isn’t just talk. A&M’s 2027 defensive back class is already shaping up to be something special.

The group includes four-star safeties Kamarui Dorsey and JayQuan Snell, four-star cornerback Raylaun Henry, and versatile four-star athlete Hakeem Frampton, who’s trending upward as a corner prospect. If the Aggies can add Blaylock to that mix, it’s not just about depth - it’s about building a secondary with serious star power.

Blaylock is currently ranked as the No. 44 cornerback nationally and the No. 64 overall prospect in Texas, according to Rivals. But rankings aside, it’s the fit within Elko and Hemphill’s defensive system that makes this a potential match worth watching. With Elko’s expertise in the secondary and Hemphill’s aggressive, disciplined approach to playcalling, this group has the tools to grow into one of the most dynamic units in the country.

The Aggies are laying the groundwork now, and if they can keep stacking talent like this, the 2027 class could be a defining one for the Elko era in College Station.
