March Madness has a way of etching unforgettable moments into the annals of college basketball, and Texas A&M's last visit to Oklahoma City was no exception. The Aggies found themselves in a seemingly insurmountable 12-point hole against Northern Iowa with under a minute left in the Round of 32. Yet, through a mix of relentless press defense, key turnovers, and clutch three-pointers, they clawed their way into overtime and secured a victory.
Bucky McMillan, reflecting on that iconic comeback, credits assistant coach Mitch Cole for jogging his memory. McMillan's emphasis on press defense, a strategy he honed during his own playing days, became a pivotal factor in that remarkable turnaround.
Back in 2016, McMillan was a high school coach in Mountain Brook, Alabama, when he witnessed Texas A&M's miraculous rally. He immediately reached out to Mitch Cole, marveling at how the press they used mirrored the one he learned in college, known as the "140s." This unique defensive scheme played a crucial role in the Aggies' historic win.
As McMillan recalls, "I was watching it live when it happened, and I texted Mitch Cole...and I said man, that is unbelievable. Crazy.
Our press is kind of based on this guy that I played for in college, and we called it 140s. The press they ran to get back in the game was our 140 press.
It's kind of unique in how it's described."
That unforgettable comeback remains one of the greatest in March Madness history. It wasn't just about the press; it required forcing turnovers and nailing crucial three-pointers.
Northern Iowa, a formidable team that season, had already stunned Texas with a half-court buzzer-beater in the Round of 64. Beating both major Texas schools in one weekend would have been a feat, but Texas A&M's last-minute heroics were simply too much to overcome.
Looking ahead, the Aggies face a different challenge. Their recent performance against Oklahoma left much to be desired, especially in the first half where scoring was scarce. To succeed against Saint Mary's, they'll need to recreate the defensive pressure and shooting prowess that fueled their legendary comeback.
