Texas A&M Leads Race for 2027 Star During Massive Recruiting Weekend

Texas A&M is emerging as a serious contender in the race for elite 2027 wide receiver Eric McFarland, signaling a strong early recruiting push under Mike Elko.

It’s a big recruiting weekend in College Station, and Mike Elko’s staff is rolling out the maroon carpet for some of the top talent in the 2027 class. Texas A&M is hosting a loaded group of high-profile prospects, including multiple five-stars. Among the headliners: elite offensive tackle Kennedy Brown and versatile linebacker Cooper Witten - yes, that Witten - the son of future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten.

This visit window stretches over the next two weekends, and while not everyone will be in town right away, the Aggies are setting the stage for a crucial stretch in their recruiting push. One name to keep an eye on is 2027 four-star wide receiver Eric McFarland. The IMG Academy standout won’t be on campus this weekend, but he’s scheduled to visit next weekend for Texas A&M’s Junior Day on January 24.

McFarland’s recruitment is heating up fast, and Texas A&M is right in the thick of it. Alongside Ohio State and USC, the Aggies are pushing hard for the electric wideout, and according to McFarland, those three programs are recruiting him the most aggressively right now.

He’s already made two trips to College Station, and both left a strong impression. One visit came during the Jimbo Fisher era, while the other was a game-day experience this past season when the Aggies hosted South Carolina. And with Texas A&M coming off an 11-2 season and their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance, the buzz around the program is real - and recruits are taking notice.

“I have an upcoming visit to Texas A&M January 24 for Junior Day,” McFarland said. “I’ve been there twice and always enjoy it there.

I went when Jimbo Fisher was still there and then went on a game day visit when they hosted South Carolina. They’re an upcoming program that had a really good year.

The game atmosphere was incredible and I think I could fit in really well there.”

That potential fit is more than just a feeling - it’s tied closely to the offensive vision under new playcaller Holmon Wiggins. After two years as A&M’s wide receivers coach, Wiggins is stepping into the OC role next season, and his résumé speaks volumes. He spent five seasons at Alabama under Nick Saban, serving as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, where he helped develop a pipeline of NFL-caliber talent, including Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith.

Wiggins’ ability to mold elite receivers is a major selling point, especially for a player like McFarland, who’s looking for more than just NIL deals - he wants to be part of an offense where he can thrive. And with Wiggins now calling the shots, there’s a clear vision for how a dynamic receiver like McFarland could be deployed in Aggieland.

According to Rivals, McFarland ranks as the No. 22 overall prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 4 wide receiver nationally, and the No. 3 overall player in the state of Florida - a hotbed for elite talent. That kind of profile makes him a priority target for any top-tier program, and A&M is making sure he knows he’s wanted.

As the Aggies continue to build momentum under Elko, weekends like this - and the ones to follow - are crucial. The foundation is in place, the trajectory is promising, and with prospects like McFarland showing genuine interest, Texas A&M is putting itself in position to stay in the national spotlight for years to come.
