Texas A&M Lands Key Visit From Elite 2027 Offensive Tackle Prospect

Texas A&M continues to build momentum in its 2027 recruiting class as it emerges as a frontrunner for elite offensive tackle Mark Matthews.

Texas A&M is putting together something special with its 2027 recruiting class - and the momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. With a strong foundation already in place, the Aggies are making a serious push to finish with the No. 1-ranked class heading into the spring and summer.

One of the key names already locked in? Four-star quarterback commit Jayce Johnson, who’s scheduled to take an official visit.

And that’s just the beginning.

The spring football calendar is shaping up to be a pivotal stretch for the program, not just for on-field development, but for recruiting as well. Several top-tier prospects are expected to make their way to College Station, and one name that could headline that group is five-star offensive lineman Mark Matthews - a player with the kind of upside that turns good classes into great ones.

The Aggies got another boost with the return of offensive line coach Adam Cushing, whose brief link to Michigan State was quickly shut down. That’s a big win for Texas A&M.

Cushing has been instrumental in developing one of the SEC’s most consistent offensive line units over the past two seasons, and he’s matched that success on the recruiting trail. In 2024, A&M signed six offensive linemen - and several of those newcomers are already in the mix for starting or rotational roles this upcoming season.

That kind of quick development pipeline is exactly what elite recruits are looking for.

So far in the 2027 cycle, the Aggies have secured commitments from two promising four-star offensive tackles: DeMarrion Johnson and Kaeden Scott. Both are big, athletic, and fit the mold of what Texas A&M has been building up front - physical linemen with the footwork to protect in space and the power to move defenders in the run game.

But the big fish still on the board is Mark Matthews. According to recruiting insider Marcus Benjamin, Texas A&M is firmly in the mix, alongside Notre Dame, Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Georgia. The Aggies, along with Miami and Nebraska, are reportedly close to locking in an official visit from the five-star lineman.

Matthews himself has mentioned that Georgia, Miami, and Texas A&M are the three schools with the highest chance of landing an official visit. He’s targeting a summer commitment, aiming to make a decision just before the start of his senior season.

And make no mistake - Matthews is the kind of prospect who can change the trajectory of a program. At 6'6" and over 300 pounds, he’s already built like a future NFL tackle.

But it’s not just size - it’s the athleticism that sets him apart. A former basketball player, Matthews moves with fluidity and balance that’s rare for someone his size.

That background has helped him develop elite footwork and body control, making him a natural in pass protection.

Currently ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the country by Rivals - and the top offensive tackle and top prospect in the state of Florida - Matthews is one of the most coveted recruits in the nation. He’s the type of player who can anchor an offensive line for years and, down the line, hear his name called early on draft night.

Texas A&M is in a strong position, both on the field and on the recruiting trail. With a proven offensive line coach back in the fold, a quarterback already committed, and a growing list of elite trench talent on board or seriously considering the program, the Aggies are building a foundation that could define the future of the SEC. If they can close on Matthews and a few more top-tier names this spring and summer, don’t be surprised if they finish with the No. 1 class - and a whole lot of buzz heading into the fall.
