Texas A&M Commit Sets Visit as Quarterback Changes Loom

With Texas A&Ms quarterback future in flux, four-star 2027 commit Jayce Johnson is set to make his long-awaited official visit amid growing buzz around his potential and the programs shifting landscape.

Texas A&M’s quarterback room is heading into a new era under head coach Mike Elko - and it’s going to look a lot different by the time the 2027 season rolls around.

With current starter Marcel Reed potentially heading to the NFL after the 2026 campaign, the Aggies are already laying the groundwork for the next wave of talent under center. That includes incoming freshman Helaman Casuga, who brings promise but remains an unknown at the college level, especially with new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins now calling the shots.

But the bigger headline right now? Texas A&M has its first quarterback commit in the 2027 class - and he’s a name worth circling: Jayce Johnson.

Johnson, a four-star prospect and currently ranked as the No. 7 quarterback in the 2027 cycle by 247Sports, has been steadily climbing the national rankings. He’s got the tools you want in a modern QB - elite arm strength, a confident presence, and the kind of upside that could make him the face of the program down the line. The next step in his development will be refining his mechanics in the pocket and becoming more fluid under pressure, but the raw talent is undeniable.

The Georgia native has already made multiple trips to College Station, showing a clear interest in what the Aggies are building. Weather may have forced the cancellation of a key junior day last year - one that was supposed to include Johnson - but that hasn’t slowed the momentum between him and the program.

According to recruiting insider Joseph Hastings, Johnson has now locked in an official visit to Texas A&M for May 28-30, right at the start of the summer recruiting window. That gives Elko and his staff a golden opportunity to double down on their pitch: development, culture, and a clear path to the field.

And Johnson is buying in - at least for now.

“I’m in a really good place with Texas A&M right now,” he said recently, signaling that the Aggies remain his top choice. But in the world of college football recruiting, nothing is ever truly set in stone.

At last month’s Under Armour All-American Game, Johnson made it clear that while he’s committed, he’s still keeping his options open - especially in light of the recent coaching changes in College Station.

“I’m locked in but I’ve still got my recruitment process open; you never know what can happen,” Johnson said. “My OC from Texas A&M just left, and that made me think about some things. But I’m still locked in with them; they’re family-oriented, and they are good people to be around who develop their players.”

That’s the tightrope every top-tier program walks in today’s recruiting landscape - keeping elite talent committed while navigating coaching changes, NIL opportunities, and the ever-changing college football ecosystem.

Johnson sits at No. 65 overall in the 2027 class and is the seventh-ranked quarterback nationally, as well as one of the top prospects out of Georgia. He’s the kind of player who can be a cornerstone for a program - and Texas A&M is doing everything it can to make sure he stays in maroon and white.

The Aggies’ quarterback future is far from settled, but with Jayce Johnson in the fold and a critical summer visit ahead, the foundation is starting to take shape.
