Texas A&Ms Tournament Hopes May Ride On One Crucial Return

As Texas A&M gears up for a promising basketball season under Coach Bucky McMillan, senior forward Mackenzie Mgbako is set to be a pivotal force with his renewed health and physicality, aiming to propel the team back to the NCAA Tournament.

Texas A&M’s season opener is almost here, and one of the biggest reasons for optimism in College Station is getting back on the floor healthy.

Second-year coach Bucky McMillan and the Aggies will open the 2026-2027 season against Alabama State on Tuesday, November 3, with the regular season less than a week away. On Thursday, McMillan met with the media along with several players, including senior forward Mackenzie Mgbako, who said he’s fully healthy after missing all but seven non-conference games last season.

For Texas A&M, that matters. Pair Mgbako with transfer shooting guard PJ Haggerty, and the Aggies have a chance to make another push toward the NCAA Tournament after falling to Houston in the Round of 32. Haggerty’s ability to attack off the dribble and fit into McMillan’s up-tempo style gives this roster a different kind of juice, while Mgbako’s availability may be just as important once SEC play ramps up.

Mgbako said this offseason has felt different, with his earlier health problems no longer hanging over him as the season nears. He also pointed to a more intense summer conditioning program and added muscle as reasons he believes he’ll be better equipped to handle contact in the paint.

"Super excited, man. Super excited.

You know how it goes, man. That first game, energy is up, amped up.

(Gotta) keep that (up) through the tenure of the season. So, yeah, man.

I'm really blessed to be back in this position."

Texas A&M brought in six other key transfer portal additions, while forwards Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson are back as well. Add former Texas transfer Jordan Pople, who is expected to handle point guard duties, and the Aggies have a roster that looks deeper and more proven than it has in more than 10 years.

Mgbako’s view of the group is straightforward. He sees a team built on pace, pressure and experience.

"I mean, we're really talented team. We work hard.

You know, we try to play together. We try to play fast.

We like to shoot the ball, so I feel like anything else, we're just a high-energy level team. We play together.

We got a lot of veterans, a lot of older players who understand the game. Just leading with that kind of mentality is probably what's gonna separate us."

Mgbako transferred from Indiana before the 2025-2026 season, and Texas A&M will be counting on him to set the tone with speed and physical defense. If he can do that, McMillan’s offense should have plenty of chances to run, and Mgbako should get the kind of scoring looks that made him a former McDonald’s All-American in the first place.

Marcel Reed Puts Texas A&Ms Next QB Decision In Focus

Marcel Reeds future has become one of the more important questions hanging over Texas A&M as the program looks ahead to the 2027 season. The redshirt junior still has one year of eligibility left, and after his recent performance, the Aggies are left weighing what his return would mean for the quarterback room and for the offense overall.

Nothing official has been announced, which keeps the situation open for now, but it also puts Texas A&Ms next move in sharper focus. If Reed does not come back, the Aggies could be forced to explore the transfer portal for help at quarterback, a decision that would shape the depth chart and the direction of the offense in a hurry. Texas A&M Faces One Recruiting Test Fans Can't Ignore

Texas A&Ms season has not made life easy on the recruiting trail, but Mike Elko and his staff are still trying to sell the bigger picture. The Aggies have spent much of the fall reinforcing the idea that their 2027 class is about more than short-term results, and that message appears to be resonating with four-star safety JayQuan Snell, who recently reaffirmed his commitment.

Elko has also made it clear the program is moving forward with Marcel Reed still entrenched as the starter, a decision that helps stabilize the conversation around what Texas A&M is building on offense. For a staff trying to hold together a promising class through a difficult stretch, the test is less about one player or one game than whether recruits continue to buy into the relationships and the long-range vision the Aggies are selling. Texas A&M Secondary May Not Be The Real Defensive Problem

Texas A&Ms defense has spent much of the season under a microscope, and the pass rush has been the most obvious culprit. The Aggies have only seven sacks after posting a far more disruptive profile a year ago, and that drop has left the rest of the unit working from behind. The secondary, which coach Mike Elko praised before the season, has not exactly escaped blame either after allowing too many explosive plays in the early losses.

Even so, the numbers suggest the back end may not be the main issue. Texas A&M ranks fifth nationally in catch rate allowed percentage, a sign that the coverage has been steadier than the biggest breakdowns suggest. Dezz Ricks has also put together a notable season and helped his NFL Draft case, but the larger concern remains whether the defense can generate enough pressure up front to make everything else look cleaner.
