Texas A&M’s quarterback situation has gone from manageable to messy fast, and Mike Elko is not pretending there’s a simple fix waiting in the transfer portal.
With Marcel Reed scuffling through the first month of 2026, Elko was asked Monday about the Aggies’ quarterback depth and the reality of trying to build it through transfers. His answer was blunt.
“It’s impossible. I don’t think anybody anywhere is recruiting depth out of the portal. I don’t think people in the portal go where there is an established starter,” Elko said.
That comment landed against a rough backdrop for Texas A&M, which entered the season ranked No. 9 before the SEC schedule started turning on the Aggies. A home loss to Kentucky and then a blowout defeat at LSU have knocked Texas A&M out of the AP Poll and left the season looking very different than it did just a few weeks ago.
Reed’s numbers are a big part of why the conversation has shifted. Through four games, he has thrown for 738 yards with six touchdown passes and four interceptions.
He’s completed 55.4% of his throws, and his performance against LSU was especially rough, going 10 for 26. His QBR sits at 50.9, which ranks 90th in college football.
Now Texas A&M is trying to stop the slide before it gets worse. The Aggies have dropped their first two SEC games and will look for a reset Saturday night at Kyle Field against Arkansas, another 2-2 team that is also still chasing its first SEC win in 2026.
