Texas A&M’s new-look basketball roster wasted no time showing what it can do.
In the Aggies’ season opener Tuesday night at Reed Arena, a 97-66 win over Alabama State, the transfer class supplied most of the offense and gave Bucky McMillan exactly the kind of early return he was hoping for. Four newcomers combined for nearly two-thirds of Texas A&M’s points, with Kansas State transfer PJ Haggerty setting the pace at 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Haggerty came to College Station with a scoring résumé already in hand after averaging 23.4 points per game last season, and he looked every bit like the featured weapon McMillan needs. Jordan Pope, the former Texas guard and one of the Aggies’ biggest offseason additions, chipped in 17 points and gave the backcourt another reliable scorer.
Jalen Shelley turned in the most complete line of the night. The Loyola Marymount transfer finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, notching a double-double in his first game in Maroon & White. Tyshawn Archie, who arrived from McNeese, added 11 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers from the transfer haul.
That kind of production mattered for a roster that brought back only five players from last season. McMillan added seven transfers over the offseason as part of a major reset, and Tuesday’s opener offered a clear glimpse of how quickly those pieces can fit together. The challenge gets tougher from here, but the Aggies already have evidence that their newcomers can carry real weight on offense.

Texas A&M Just Took Another Roster Hit Before The Season
Texas A&M is dealing with another preseason roster shakeup after former linebacker signee Kelvion Riggins reportedly plans to enter the transfer portal following his departure from the program during fall camp. Riggins, part of the 2025 recruiting class, never got into a game for the Aggies, but his exit adds to a growing list of personnel changes before the season even begins.
The departures have not been limited to one position group, either. Wide receivers Jerome Myles and Jonah Wilson and offensive lineman Nelson McGuire also left the program before kickoff, while Ashton Bethel-Roman remains away from the team for personal reasons. For a roster still taking shape, it is another reminder that the Aggies are still sorting through availability as camp winds down. [Read more 🡒]
Texas A&M Faces A Brutal Road Test With One Clear Weakness
Texas A&M heads into an upcoming road game at South Carolina with plenty to sort through, and the matchup does not look forgiving. The Gamecocks are riding a winning streak and have leaned on a rushing attack led by LaNorris Sellers, while the Aggies arrive with recent road struggles hanging over them and little margin for error away from home.
For Texas A&M, the path is fairly clear even if the execution is not. The Aggies need to run the ball effectively and keep South Carolina from dictating the pace, because controlling time of possession may be their best way to stay in the game and create a chance to steal one on the road. Texas A&M Suddenly Has A Real Shot To Flip This Road Test
Texas A&Ms Week 10 outlook has taken on a different feel after the latest round of upset chatter around the college football slate. The Aggies are part of a broader conversation about teams that may be better positioned than the market gives them credit for, with the matchup drawing attention from bettors looking for value in road games and from fans watching how the numbers stack up across key performance metrics.
For A&M, the appeal is less about hype than about the way this game fits into the larger betting picture. The analysis around the weekend points to underdog angles and a few spots where rankings and recent form suggest the gap may not be as wide as it looks, which is exactly the kind of setup that can make a road test feel more winnable than expected.
