Texas A&Ms First 9-Game SEC Grind Just Took Another Turn

Texas A&M's path to a successful 2026 season becomes more intriguing as a key opponent loses a critical defensive player.

Texas A&M’s 2026 SEC slate is already shaping up to be a grind, and one of the teams standing in the way just took a major hit.

The Aggies will be navigating the league’s first season with nine conference games, a change that figures to leave more teams sitting in the 9-3 and 8-4 range and make life even messier for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. For Texas A&M, the back half of the schedule looks especially demanding, with coach Mike Elko’s group set to host Tennessee before heading to Norman to face Oklahoma.

That trip to Oklahoma now comes with a notable wrinkle: the Sooners will reportedly be without one of their top defenders. On Saturday, it was confirmed that star safety Edrees Farooq suffered a knee injury, specifically a torn torn Patellar Tendon, and will miss the entire 2026 season.

Farooq was a central piece of the defense, finishing tied for third on the team with 76 tackles while adding two interceptions and three pass deflections. His absence is a serious setback for a Tennessee secondary that was trying to make another jump this fall.

Texas A&M, meanwhile, enters Year 3 under Elko with momentum. The Aggies made major progress in Year 2 after reaching the CFP for the first time in program history, and quarterback Marcel Reed posted a breakout first full season as a starter with 3,169 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, plus more than 500 rushing yards and six scores.

The roster is built with the new schedule in mind, too. Texas A&M returns 65% of its 2025 team and has added 17 transfer portal newcomers along with the 2026 signing class. So far, the Aggies have also managed to avoid the injury issues that have cropped up through eight preseason practices.

Texas A&M Fans Just Got Another Brutal NFL Injury Update

Another former Texas A&M lineman is headed for a season on the sidelines before his NFL career even had a chance to get rolling. Chase Bisontis, who joined the Arizona Cardinals as an offensive guard, was injured in a preseason game and now faces surgery after suffering a torn MCL.

The setback adds to a rough stretch for Aggies fans tracking former players in the league, since Bisontis is now the second Texas A&M product to be ruled out for the upcoming NFL season because of a knee injury, following Nic Scourtons ACL issue. Arizona has already placed Bisontis on injured reserve, leaving his rookie year on hold before it ever truly began. [Read more 🡒]

Texas A&M Freshmen Are Suddenly Pushing A Real Playing Time Debate

Texas A&Ms offseason conversation has started to pick up around two newcomers who already look ready to force their way into the mix. Brandon Arrington and KJ Edwards have both drawn attention from EA College Football 27, a nod that only adds to the buzz around a freshmen class that could matter sooner rather than later in College Station.

The bigger issue for the Aggies is how quickly those ratings might translate into actual snaps once the season gets going. Arrington and Edwards are both being talked about as players who can challenge for roles right away, which is exactly the kind of problem a staff wants, even if it means sorting through a deeper and more crowded competition for playing time.
