Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting run took a hit when one of the class’s most coveted backs chose to stay in-state and go elsewhere.
Landen Williams-Callis, a standout at Richmond Randle High School, committed to the Texas Longhorns instead of the Aggies, dealing Mike Elko’s staff a notable loss in a cycle where Texas A&M has otherwise been rolling. The Aggies still sit atop the country with the No. 1 recruiting class, but they have not yet landed a running back.
Williams-Callis comes in as the No. 3 running back in the class, the No. 4 prospect in Texas and a top-40 recruit overall. Even at 5-foot-7 and a half and 190 pounds, his production has made him one of the most sought-after players in the country.
His numbers at Richmond Randle tell the story. Over three seasons, he has piled up 7,554 rushing yards and 125 touchdowns while averaging 10 yards per carry. He has also added 729 receiving yards and seven more scores.
For Texas A&M, the miss stands out because the staff has loaded up at premium spots elsewhere in the class, but still hasn’t found a back willing to head to College Station. Williams-Callis looked like the clean fit, and Texas was able to beat the Aggies to the punch.
With most of the running backs the Aggies have offered already committed to other programs, one possible path forward is the flip route. SaRod Baker, the No. 5 running back in the cycle, is currently pledged to Texas Tech and could become a name to watch.
For now, Texas A&M is left regrouping and searching for the next move in the backfield race.
