Texas A&M’s 2026 roster is loaded, but one of the quieter fall camp stories is starting to break through: freshman safety Chance Collins.
The Aggies already have several first-year players drawing attention, and most of the buzz has gone to names fans knew well before they arrived in College Station. RB KJ Edwards, WR Aaron Gregory, CB Brandon Arrington and DL Bryce Perry-Wright all came in with major recruiting profiles, so it hasn’t been a surprise to hear their names tied to strong camp performances.
Collins, though, has been a different kind of story.
The Mansfield, Texas, product entered the cycle as a late riser and was outside the top 300 when he committed to Texas A&M before finishing as a four-star. He hasn’t been discussed nearly as much as some of the other freshmen, but that changed a bit thanks to a recent mic’d up video from the program featuring Mike Elko.

Midway through the clip, Rueben Owens walks up to Elko and asks where “two-eight” is from, referring to Collins, who wears No. 28.
Elko says he’s from Dallas and asks why Owens wants to know. Owens answers: “he’s the truth.”
That’s the kind of line that gets your attention, especially coming from a veteran player like Owens. He’s seen plenty of talent, and he’s gone against NFL players since arriving in College Station. For him to speak that highly of a freshman says Collins has made a real impression.
The challenge for Collins is obvious: safety is crowded. Dalton Brooks, Marcus Ratcliffe and Tawfiq Byard are all ahead of him, so early snaps won’t be easy to come by. Even so, it wouldn’t be a shock if he starts working into the rotation by the end of the season if this level of play continues.
And beyond this fall, Collins could end up being one of the more important additions in the room. Texas A&M is likely to see plenty of turnover in the defensive backfield after this season, and getting a young player like Collins some experience now would only help down the road. For now, he’s a freshman worth watching closely.

Texas A&Ms running back recruiting board for the 2027 class already has a familiar name on it in SaRod Baker, the current Texas Tech commit the Aggies are still working to pry loose. The pursuit fits the way this staff has approached in-state talent before, and it also brings back memories of previous recruiting battles in which Trooper Taylor helped push a flip across the finish line.
Baker remains pledged to Texas Tech, so this is far from a simple courtship and the Red Raiders have every reason to keep holding firm. Still, the Aggies have stayed in the mix, and with a prospect of this caliber in Texas, it is the kind of long game Texas A&M cannot afford to ignore if it wants to keep stacking the states best backs. Marcel Reed Is Making Texas A&Ms QB Outlook A Lot Harder To Ignore
Marcel Reed has spent fall camp giving Texas A&M a much different kind of quarterback conversation than the one that followed him around earlier in his career. The athleticism was never in question, but what has stood out lately is the way hes handling the offense, making cleaner decisions and showing a sharper feel for where the ball needs to go. For a program trying to settle its quarterback outlook, that kind of development matters.
The optimism is real enough that some of the national skepticism around Reed may be getting ahead of itself. Still, camp is one thing and Saturdays are another, and Reeds next step is proving that the growth in command and accuracy carries over when the games count.
