Texas A&M's QB Decision Just Became Painful Again

A crucial quarterback decision haunts Texas A&M as fans question the choice that may have derailed their 2026 season.

Texas A&M’s quarterback decision from two years ago is looking a lot bigger now that the Aggies are stumbling through a rough 2026 and Conner Weigman is thriving at Houston.

The question hanging over College Station is simple: did Mike Elko and his staff choose the right quarterback in 2024 when they went with senior Marcel Reed over Weigman, who is now starting for the Cougars? There still isn’t a clean answer, even with the way this season has unfolded.

Reed has already shown what he can do for Texas A&M. People around Aggie football may be quick to forget he helped push the team to an 11-0 start in 2025, including a 27-point second-half comeback against South Carolina that helped lift A&M as high as No. 3 in the national rankings.

But 2026 has been a different story. The Aggies have lost three of their four SEC games by double figures, and the frustration has piled up fast.

The numbers tell part of the story. In those defeats, Reed has thrown just one touchdown and five interceptions, and he has failed to top 200 passing yards against LSU and Missouri. The production has been one thing, but the broader picture has been even worse: Reed’s confidence, body language and overall demeanor have all been questioned as the calls for him to lose the starting job keep growing.

The pressure has spilled over to the sideline, too. Last week, Elko drew attention for referring to a very loud section of the fanbase as a “cesspool”.

While Texas A&M is spiraling, Weigman is giving Houston exactly what it hoped for. Through six games, he has thrown 15 touchdowns against just one interception and helped the Cougars to a 5-1 record.

There had been talk that A&M believed Reed was the better athlete, but Weigman has flashed plenty of movement ability himself, with three explosive runs and six rushing touchdowns already this season. He’s now up to 17 total rushing touchdowns in a season and a half at Houston.

Weigman hasn’t been doing it against SEC competition every week, but his track record at Houston keeps getting stronger. He owns a 15-4 record as a starter and has the Cougars in the hunt for a Big 12 title after Saturday’s 35-32 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State.

Maybe Weigman wasn’t the best fit for Elko’s staff. Maybe Reed was.

But right now, the better overall quarterback looks like the one Texas A&M passed on, based on the stats, the steadiness and the record. If the Aggies could rewind that decision, both careers might look very different.

There’s still no way to know whether the team results would change with it.

What’s clear is this: Reed and Weigman are different quarterbacks, and each needs a different kind of support system to bring out the best in him.

Texas A&M May Have Found Something On Offense At The Right Time

A lopsided win over The Citadel gave Texas A&M a chance to clean up some offensive rhythm, and the Aggies took it. In a 41-0 non-conference victory in Week 7, Texas A&M piled up 501 yards while the defense kept The Citadel to 183 total yards, a performance that looked more like the balance the Aggies have been searching for as the schedule gets tougher.

Marcel Reed continued to settle in at quarterback, pushing his completion rate to 62 percent and connecting with Aaron Gregory for a touchdown. Jamarion Morrow added the kind of red-zone punch this offense can lean on, scoring three times in a game where the Aggies did just about everything cleanly. The bigger question now is whether this was a one-week reset or the start of something more useful for Texas A&M moving forward. [Read more 🡒]

Texas A&M Faces One Offensive Decision That Could Change Alabama Game

Texas A&M took care of business with a 41-0 win over The Citadel, but the bigger challenge is coming fast with Alabama next on the schedule. As the Aggies shift from a comfortable nonconference result to a far more demanding SEC test, one offensive question stands out: how aggressively should they lean into quarterback Marcel Reed as a runner?

Reeds ability to add value on designed running plays has become a point of interest after the recent stretch of games, and it could influence how much strain Texas A&M is able to put on Alabamas defense. The idea is still speculative, but it speaks to a broader issue for the Aggies as they look for ways to make their offense more consistent against a tougher opponent. [Read more 🡒]

Marcel Reed Just Changed The Alabama Conversation For Texas A&M

A routine win over The Citadel still offered a useful glimpse of where Texas A&Ms offense may be headed, and Marcel Reed was at the center of it. The Aggies kept the game on schedule by scoring touchdowns on every drive Reed directed in the first half, while the defense handled the triple-option side of things with a shutout that never let the afternoon get away from them.

Reed finished 8 of 13 for 130 yards and a touchdown without an interception, which only added to the sense that his passing game is settling in at the right time. With other offensive pieces contributing and Alabama next on the calendar, the decision at quarterback now carries a different kind of weight for the Aggies, and it is no longer just about who can get them through a tune-up.
