As Texas A&M gears up for the 2026 season, the Aggies are riding high on the momentum of their historic College Football Playoff appearance just a few months back. Coach Mike Elko, now in his third year, has a clear vision for the team, even as he acknowledges that they’re still on the journey to reaching their full potential.
This offseason has been a whirlwind of change, with over 20 players exiting the program. Notably, 13 of those were former starters who showcased their talents at the NFL Scouting Combine.
In response, Elko and his recharged coaching staff have been busy, bringing in 17 new faces through the transfer portal and welcoming 25 out of 26 promising freshmen from the 2026 signing class. Early impressions from spring practice suggest these newcomers are ready to make their mark.
The spotlight, however, shines brightest on starting quarterback Marcel Reed. With four new offensive linemen set to protect him, Reed’s performance will be pivotal to the Aggies' hopes of returning to the CFP.
Despite a rocky end to last season, Reed has proven his mettle, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, and adding another 493 yards and six scores on the ground. It’s important to remember that four of his eight interceptions came during the final two losses, a hiccup in an otherwise stellar run.
ESPN’s Jake Trotter recently tagged Reed as the returning starter with the "most to prove" in 2026. It’s a fair assessment given his struggles against top-tier teams like Texas and Miami, where he faced relentless pressure, resulting in eight sacks and four interceptions without a touchdown to his name. These are precisely the challenges Reed must overcome to elevate Texas A&M into a national powerhouse.
Despite the criticism, Reed is undeniably one of college football’s standout athletes. His late-season stumbles shouldn’t overshadow his potential. With some refinement in his footwork and decision-making, Reed has all the tools to become a formidable pocket passer.
Texas A&M’s offense is poised for success with the addition of veteran wide receiver Isaiah Horton through the transfer portal. Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, the Aggies' receiving corps is set to be a force. The up-tempo passing attack will challenge defenses to contain star receiver Mario Craver, opening opportunities for the rest of the talented rotation.
As the Aggies embark on this promising season, all eyes will be on Marcel Reed to see if he can rise to the occasion and lead Texas A&M back to the pinnacle of college football.
