Texas A&M’s quarterback room is already set up for the present, but the future just got a whole lot more interesting.
Marcel Reed is back as a redshirt junior and enters his second full season as the Aggies’ starter. Behind him, redshirt freshman Brady Hart appears to be the leading candidate for the backup job this preseason, with freshman Helaman Casuga also in the mix. Even with that depth chart in place, it’s still not clear whether either Reed’s current backups can eventually take over when he’s gone.
That’s where the recruiting picture starts to matter. In Texas A&M’s No. 1-ranked 2027 class, four-star commit Jayce Johnson already belongs in the discussion. And on Saturday, the Aggies added another major piece for the future when five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II picked A&M over LSU and Oregon.
Tabron brings what was described as an NFL-level skill set, giving Mike Elko and offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins plenty to shape in the years ahead.
After speaking with 247Sports insider Tom Loy, Tabron also talked with ESPN and pointed to the same two coaches as key reasons the Aggies won out: Wiggins and QB coach Joey Lynch. The two stayed in steady contact with him throughout the process, and that connection only deepened through multiple visits.
"As soon as [Wiggins and Lynch] got their jobs in January, they've been in communication with me ever since," Tabron said. "It's been consistent from then to now.
And then I've been there three times this year. Being able to see it in person, going for a game last year and just being able to build a really good relationship with them made the difference."
Tabron’s production at Cass Technical backed up the hype. As a sophomore in 2025, he threw for 2,819 yards and 35 touchdowns and helped lead his team to the Michigan Division I state title game. His accuracy and touch are already elite, and his passing mechanics are viewed as a strength that shouldn’t be a problem early in his college career.
He also kept coming back to A&M’s No. 1-ranked 2027 class in both interviews, with five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews standing out in particular. Matthews’ “Elko Era!” chant has become a signature part of the Aggies’ recent recruiting run, and Tabron was the latest commitment to buy into it.
For Elko, the appeal is obvious. Texas A&M’s rise to the College Football Playoff and the school’s record total of 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft helped show the culture being built in College Station.

Former Texas A&M QB Just Reopened An Uncomfortable Aggies Question
Miles O'Neills move out of Texas A&M already made sense on paper, but the former four-star quarterback is now landing in a spot that keeps the Aggies quarterback picture in view. After two seasons in College Station, ONeill entered the transfer portal and chose North Carolina, a program that offers a cleaner path and a fresh start after his fit in Texas A&Ms offense was viewed as incompatible.
North Carolinas QB room is still sorting itself out, and ONeill arrived in a situation where opportunities should be there under the Tar Heels coaching staff. For Texas A&M, the uncomfortable part is less about where he went than what his exit says about the challenge of aligning talent with the right system, a question that never really goes away when a former blue-chip quarterback finds a better opening somewhere else. Texas Suddenly Has A Protection Concern A&M Fans Will Notice
Texas preseason work took an uneasy turn when starting left tackle Trevor Goosby left practice with an apparent knee injury, a development that carries obvious ripple effects for an offense trying to settle in before the season opener. For A&M fans watching the Longhorns closely, it is the kind of camp setback that immediately raises questions about how much protection the front can provide if one of its most important pieces is not right.
Goosby is scheduled for testing Tuesday morning, but Texas has not offered a diagnosis or any recovery timeline, leaving his status in limbo for now. Until there is more clarity, the concern is less about one practice than about what happens if the issue lingers into the final stretch of preparation. [Read more 🡒]
Texas A&Ms Offensive Ceiling May Come Down To One Unsettled Unit
Marcel Reed is back as Texas A&Ms starting quarterback and team captain for 2026, giving the offense a proven centerpiece in both the passing game and on the ground. He arrives with a track record that includes substantial career production and the kind of athleticism the Aggies have already shown they want to keep leaning on, especially as Holmon Wiggins takes over as offensive coordinator.
The bigger question sits in front of him. Texas A&M is rebuilding most of its offensive line, with only center Mark Nabou back as a starter, and the staff has added help through the transfer portal to stabilize the unit. Wiggins wants a run-focused offense, but how far that approach can go will depend on how quickly the line comes together and whether it can create the balance Reed needs to make the passing game a real threat.
