Texas A&M added another major piece to its 2028 recruiting class on Saturday, and this one comes with plenty of star power. Five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II picked the Aggies over LSU and Oregon, giving Mike Elko’s program its second commitment in the class.
The choice didn’t come out of nowhere. Recent interviews pointed in this direction, and Tabron has built strong ties with the Texas A&M staff, especially Elko and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch.
Tabron enters his junior season at Cass Technical in Detroit after a huge 2024 campaign. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound quarterback helped lead his team to a 13-1 record while throwing for 2,819 yards and 35 touchdowns. Over the course of his young career, he has appeared in 24 games and piled up 4,475 passing yards with 52 touchdowns.
His game gives coaches plenty to work with. Tabron’s accuracy, fast release and arm strength have made him one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the country, and Texas A&M will keep working to hold onto him even as LSU and Oregon stay involved.
Just a few hours after his commitment, Tabron talked with 247Sports insider Tom Loy and put his decision in simple terms. Following the lead of several 2027 commits, including five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, he said, “Elko era, Gig ‘em," while pointing to the culture Elko is building and naming several 2028 prospects he wants Texas A&M to target next.
If he keeps trending the way he has, Tabron looks like a natural candidate to be the Aggies’ future starting quarterback, and he appears to be a strong fit for new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins.

Marcel Reed's Reported Price Tag Says Everything About Texas A&M's Stakes
Marcel Reeds standing in Texas A&Ms plans already made him one of the programs most important returnees, but the reported financial commitment around him adds another layer to the Aggies offseason expectations. CBS Sports reported that Reed is set to make around $3 million this season, a figure that underscores just how seriously the program views its quarterback situation as college football settles into a new era of player compensation.
The exact numbers in these reports can be hard to pin down, and there is always some skepticism attached to roster accounting, but the broader point is clear enough for Texas A&M. The Aggies are operating near the lower end of the highest-spending Power 5 tier, and Reeds price tag speaks to the stakes of getting the quarterback position right as revenue-sharing rules reshape how programs build and retain talent. Texas A&M Backfield Battle Could Change The Aggies' 2026 Offense
Texas A&Ms backfield is entering a familiar kind of reshuffle as the Aggies look ahead to 2026, with LeVeon Moss and Amari Daniels now gone and Rueben Owens positioned to step into the lead role. Owens has the most obvious path to the top of the depth chart, even if his 2024 season was mostly lost to injury, and the staff still has reason to think the position could be handled the way it has been in previous years, with more than one runner sharing the load.
The interesting part is how quickly the picture can change once camp opens, especially with a young runner like Jamarion Morrow pushing for more work after flashing in limited 2025 action. Texas A&M does not need to settle the issue in the spring, but the next few weeks will go a long way toward determining whether the offense leans on one featured option or settles back into a tandem approach that keeps multiple backs involved.
