Texas’ wild comeback win over Ohio State didn’t just light up the scoreboard - it lit up the TV ratings, too.
The Saturday showdown pulled in 14 million viewers, according to Nielsen numbers released Tuesday, making it the most-watched Week 2 game of any college football season. It also gave ABC/ESPN its biggest regular-season game in 10 years, topping the 2016 Ohio State-Michigan matchup on ABC, which drew 16.84 million viewers.
ABC said the game peaked at 16.4 million viewers and stood as the most-viewed regular-season game in primetime since 2012, when Notre Dame beat Southern California. Ohio State remains a major ratings magnet, and Texas has become one as well: when the teams opened against each other last year in Columbus, the Fox broadcast drew 16.62 million viewers. Ohio State-Michigan, as usual, led last year’s regular-season ratings at 18.4 million.
Texas has been a strong pull on its own, too. ABC’s biggest game last year was Texas-Texas A&M at 13 million viewers, and two years ago Georgia’s win over Texas drew 13.19 million, outdrawing Ohio State-Michigan. That same year, the Georgia-Texas rematch in the SEC championship brought in even more, with 16.63 million viewers.
The Disney networks have been sitting on a ratings run the past two seasons, with Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC and Disney taking over the SEC package along with the ACC and some Big 12 games. Through the first two weeks of this season, that momentum has carried right over, with Ohio State-Texas giving them another huge boost.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Alabama’s 3:30 p.m. ET win over Kentucky drew 7.3 million viewers on ABC and peaked at 9 million. ABC said that was “more than double” any other game in that window.
Three more games on Disney networks also cleared 1.8 million viewers:
• Texas A&M’s win over Arizona State on ABC at noon drew 2.5 million and peaked at 3 million.
• Oklahoma State’s upset of Oregon on ESPN at noon drew 2.1 million and peaked at 2.9 million.
• Tennessee’s win at Georgia Tech on ESPN at 7 p.m. drew 1.8 million and peaked at 2.6 million.
Fox took the noon slot, as expected, with Michigan’s win over Oklahoma drawing 8.22 million viewers.
NBC had Week 1’s top draw with Notre Dame’s win over Wisconsin, which brought in 8.1 million viewers. ABC or ESPN accounted for eight of the 12 most-watched games overall, including LSU-Clemson, which finished second at 5.75 million viewers.
