Texas A&M has a quarterback problem, but it’s not as simple as pinning everything on Marcel Reed.
The Aggies are in a rough stretch, and Reed is becoming harder to separate from it. He’s not the only reason Texas A&M has dropped consecutive games and looked lost on offense, and handing the job to Brady Hart wouldn’t magically restore the version of the Aggies that rolled through 2025.
This roster has issues all over the place. Focusing only on the quarterback would be the easiest escape hatch.
Still, Reed’s play is part of the issue now.
Against LSU, he went 10 of 26 for 106 yards in a 35-6 loss that featured an offense unable to reach the end zone. It followed an ugly outing against Kentucky, and it was another game where Texas A&M needed more from its quarterback and didn’t get it.
That’s where the conversation gets tricky. Calling for Reed to be benched right now is one thing. Acknowledging that the Aggies may eventually have to make that move is something else entirely.
Arkansas is next at Kyle Field, and that game feels like a line in the sand. If Texas A&M comes out flat against the Razorbacks at home, that would be tough to excuse. And if Reed still can’t get the offense moving in that spot, the Aggies may have no choice but to make a change.
But this isn’t just about the next game. It’s also about what Texas A&M has behind Reed.
Can Hart be the guy Mike Elko can trust going forward? Could he grow into the starter in 2027?
Those are the kinds of questions Texas A&M needs answered before the offseason arrives, especially if Elko is eventually staring at a major transfer portal decision. Does the program go get another quarterback, or does it trust Hart or someone else already in the building?
The simplest way to find out is to actually play Hart.
That doesn’t mean it has to happen against Arkansas. Reed has done enough in his career to earn another chance to straighten this out, especially with so many problems surrounding him. But the season is moving fast toward a point where Texas A&M has to start looking beyond 2026.
If Reed doesn’t improve soon, he could make that call much easier.
