Texas A&M Is Closing In On A Huge Quarterback Win

As Texas A&M eyes a promising future with a potential commitment from elite 2028 quarterback prospect Donald Tabron II, existing talents and recruiting strategies signal a dynamic era in Aggies football.

Texas A&M is already looking down the road at quarterback, and the Aggies just picked up another strong sign that their future plans could include one of the top arms in the 2028 class.

With redshirt junior Marcel Reed set to carry the offense into the 2026 season, Texas A&M needs him to keep climbing after a year that saw him throw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns. The flip side is hard to ignore, though: his 12 interceptions were tied for the second-most in the SEC, and that’s the kind of number the Aggies can’t afford to carry if they want another trip to the College Football Playoff.

There’s also the bigger-picture question hanging over the program after 2026. Reed may not be back beyond this season and could explore the NFL Draft if he performs the way Texas A&M hopes he will. That makes the quarterback pipeline a priority, and third-year coach Mike Elko is already working to keep it stocked after landing four-star QB Jayce Johnson in the No. 1-ranked 2027 cycle.

One of the names to watch is Donald Tabron II, a blue-chip four-star from Detroit’s Cass Technical. Early in the offseason, Tabron turned heads at a Texas A&M camp, and the Aggies have stayed in a strong spot with him even as Michigan continues to push. Elko and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch appear to be in prime position to land his commitment before his junior season at Cass Technical.

The buzz around Texas A&M is real enough that the Aggies are listed with a 90% chance to secure Tabron. On Thursday, Rivals insider Sam Spiegelman went a step further and predicted Texas A&M would land him.

"Elite Detroit (Mich.) Cass QB Donald Tabron II lit up Texas A&M camp earlier this summer. From speaking with sources informed on this recruitment, the Aggies made a substantial impression on the top-30 prospect in the 2028 class and have put themselves in a favorable position with Tabron since his time in College Station.

I’ve joined the party with an early RPM forecast for the Aggies to eventually add a commitment from Tabron."

Tabron checks in at 6'4" and 190 pounds, giving him plenty of room to add size as he develops. He first jumped onto Mike Elko’s radar after a freshman season that included 1,656 passing yards and 17 touchdowns.

ESPN Just Sent A Clear Message About Texas A&M In 2026

ESPNs latest Football Power Index update gave Texas A&M a notable early signal for 2026, slotting the Aggies at No. 11 nationally and fifth in the SEC. For a program trying to keep pace in a league that reloads every year, that kind of placement matters because it suggests the Aggies are already being viewed as more than just a middle-tier contender.

The roster makeup helps explain why. Texas A&M brings back 65% of its players, adds 17 transfers and welcomes 26 freshmen, while Holmon Wiggins steps into the offensive coordinator role with playcalling duties. ESPNs model also sees an 8.4-3.8 type of season and gives the Aggies a 39.1% shot at the College Football Playoff, which leaves plenty of room for optimism and just enough uncertainty to make the next step worth watching. Texas A&M Just Got Another Huge Sign About Its Future Secondary

Texas A&Ms 2027 recruiting momentum got another jolt with safety Kamarui Dorsey, a centerpiece addition to a class that already sits No. 1 nationally after landing six five-star prospects. The Aggies have built real buzz on both sides of the ball, but Dorsey stands out as the kind of defensive back who fits the long-term picture in College Station, especially with Mike Elko continuing to stock the secondary with returning talent and transfer help.

Dorsey is expected to sign in early December, and his arrival only sharpens the conversation about what the back end of the defense could look like a year or two down the line. Texas A&M is already deep there, yet the path for future snaps is opening up, and Dorsey appears positioned to be part of the next wave when the current group moves on. [Read more 🡒]
