Texas A&M’s fans have spent years waiting for the kind of season that feels like more than a tease, and the frustration has piled up through coaching changes, ranked losses and a long drought in conference title races.
Before Mike Elko arrived in College Station, the Aggies were carrying the weight of a rough late stretch under Jimbo Fisher. Fisher closed out his time there by losing 10 straight true road games, a run that made success away from Kyle Field feel out of reach. Against AP top-25 teams, Texas A&M had gone 8-15, with the occasional signature win often followed by the same old middle-of-the-pack finish.
Elko has changed the temperature, if not fully the destination. Texas A&M has opened his tenure with a 5-5 record against ranked opponents, a solid foundation given where things stood when he took over. But for a fan base that has lived through the recent NIL era and carried memories all the way back to the Wrecking Crew days of the 1980s and 1990s, solid only goes so far.
This program has always sold itself on tradition. Football sits at the center of that identity, and the Aggies’ history runs through names like Bear Bryant, John David Crow and Johnny Manziel. More recently, Texas A&M has sent NFL talent such as Von Miller, Mike Evans, Jake Matthews and Myles Garrett into the league, with Pro Bowls and records following their time in College Station.
Even with that kind of pedigree, the missing piece has remained the same. Texas A&M has had only one losing record in the past 15 years, but it still has not reached a conference championship berth since winning the Big 12 in 1998.
That’s part of why the pressure around Elko feels different. Fisher was hired to change the program’s fortunes, and while Texas A&M landed the highest-rated recruiting class in history in 2022, character issues and poor fits sent most of that group elsewhere. Elko was brought in to steady the operation and build something more durable.
His second season produced one of the best years the Aggies have had in recent memory, setting expectations that were supposed to carry into 2026. Instead, halfway through the year, those hopes have dimmed thanks in part to subpar play from quarterback Marcel Reed among others.
Still, the season is not finished, and the next major test comes in Tuscaloosa, where Texas A&M will face Alabama for the first time since 2022. Elko expects his team to battle, and the matchup has created an almost palpable buzz around the program.
Even at 4-3, the home environment has stayed loud. More than 100,000 Aggies have filled Kyle Field for each home game, waiting for the moment when the next step finally looks real.

Alabama Faces A Brutal Late Twist Before Texas A&M Showdown
Alabamas availability list for the matchup with Texas A&M is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason. Center Racin Delgatty, cornerback Zabien Brown and running back EJ Crowell all landed on the doubtful list, while wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams has already been ruled out. Defensive lineman Terrance Green is also unavailable, adding more uncertainty to a game that already carries plenty of weight for both sides.
Texas A&M has some encouraging news of its own heading into the trip, with wide receiver Mario Craver and defensive tackle DJ Hicks both upgraded to probable. The Aggies will be watching those late injury updates closely, because availability on both fronts could shape how the game is played at the line of scrimmage and in the passing game, especially with Alabama trying to sort through a thinning depth chart. Texas A&M Gets An Opening Alabama Suddenly May Not Close
Texas A&Ms injury picture is looking a lot cleaner heading into its matchup with Alabama, with most of the players who had been listed as questionable now trending to probable. The lone exception on the Aggies report is Anto Saka, who remains questionable, but the overall direction is encouraging for a team trying to stay as close to full strength as possible in a game that figures to demand it.
Alabamas report tells a different story, with three players moving from questionable to doubtful, including running back EJ Crowell, center Racin Delgatty and cornerback Zabien Brown. Those shifts matter because availability in a game like this can swing everything from protection up front to depth in the secondary, and it gives Texas A&M a little more reason to believe the opening is real. Texas A&M Just Sent A Message Before Its Alabama Test
Texas A&M took care of business in emphatic fashion, blanking The Citadel 41-0 for its second shutout of the season. The Aggies didnt just leave with a lopsided win, either, as the performance offered another reminder that this team has the kind of defensive backbone that can travel into a bigger stage.
Now comes the real test in Tuscaloosa against No. 13 Alabama, and the focus inside the program is on sharpening the running game and tightening the defensive approach before that trip. Mike Elko has also shifted defensive play-calling duties to first-year coordinator Lyle Hemphill, a move that gives the head coach more room to oversee the bigger picture as Texas A&M prepares for one of its most important games of the season.
