Texas A&M’s offense has found a painful new problem at exactly the wrong moment: it’s making life hard before the play even has a chance to develop.
Marcel Reed has been put in too many situations where the answer isn’t a simple throw, but a full-blown puzzle. Under Collin Klein, the Aggies usually did a solid job of getting Reed into easier passing situations.
From there, his accuracy decided whether those chances turned into completions. With Holmon Wiggins now calling the offense, that process has changed.
Too often, Reed is waiting for something to open up instead of being handed a clean opportunity.
The third-down numbers tell the story. Texas A&M has gone 47 of 114 on third down this season, a 41.2% clip that is nearly the same as last year’s 41.3%.
But the split away from home has become a real issue. In road and neutral-site games, the Aggies were at 45.8% in 2025.
This fall, through three road games, that number has dropped to 27.3%. Against Alabama, Texas A&M converted four of 11 third downs, and that was part of why the Aggies managed only three points in the second half.
Mike Elko pointed directly at the trouble Monday. He said Texas A&M has been “really, really bad” on third-and-2 through third-and-6 against Power Four opponents. His fix was straightforward: run more often, give Reed clearer reads, and finish the throws that are there.
“We have to be able to find and create cleaner pictures and throw and catch the football at a better clip,” Elko said.
Reed still has to own part of it. He’s completing 56.8% of his passes this season and has thrown eight interceptions, and there have been open targets he simply hasn’t hit.
At the same time, he has been efficient in some of the exact spots Texas A&M needs more of. On third downs with six yards or fewer to go, he has completed 10 of 16 passes, and eight of those completions moved the chains.
The bigger issue is how the offense is setting things up around him. Some routes are breaking short of the sticks, forcing receivers to manufacture extra yards after the catch.
In other cases, spacing has been poor enough to let defenders crowd the throwing lanes. Pass protection has not always held up, either.
Reed has taken 13 sacks through eight games after being sacked just 10 times during the 2025 regular season.
Wiggins does not need to rip everything up. More runs on manageable downs, quicker underneath throws and designed movement that opens clearer windows for Reed would be a logical place to start. His legs should be a weapon that makes defenses uneasy, not a last-resort escape hatch when the passing game stalls.
Texas A&M used to worry about whether Reed could make the easy throw. Now the problem is getting him one, and the Aggies have four games left to fix it.

Mike Elko Just Framed Texas A&Ms Final Four Games Differently
Mike Elko used his weekly media appearance to put Texas A&Ms season in plain terms, acknowledging the Aggies have not lived up to the expectations that surrounded them before kickoff. At 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play, the margin for comfort is gone, and the issues have been hard to miss, from Marcel Reeds regression at quarterback to the broader struggles on both sides of the ball.
Even so, Elko made clear there is still something left to chase in the final stretch. With four games remaining, the Aggies are not just trying to salvage a record, but to show some progress after a season that has not matched the preseason buzz. How they respond now will say plenty about where this program stands heading into the finish. [Read more 🡒]
Nebraska Volleyball Just Took A Recruiting Hit Fans Wont Ignore
Kendall Omoruyis recruiting move gives Texas A&M another notable addition to a program that just reached the sports summit. The top volleyball prospect had been committed to Nebraska, but she announced she is now headed to College Station, pointing to personal growth and her faith as part of the decision while also thanking Nebraskas coaching staff for their role in her journey.
For the Aggies, the timing only adds to the appeal. Coming off the programs first national championship, Texas A&M is already building around a strong middle blocker group, and Omoruyi fits right into that picture as another high-end piece for the future. Nebraska, meanwhile, is left to regroup after losing a commitment it had spent time developing, a reminder of how quickly the recruiting board can shift in a sport where elite talent changes the outlook fast. South Carolina Could Hit Texas A&M With A Bigger Loss Saturday
Recruiting season rarely slows down just because a game week arrives, and Texas A&M is seeing that play out with one of its top defensive pledges. Frederick Ards III, a four-star edge rusher in the 2027 class, remains committed to the Aggies, but he has also recently visited South Carolina while drawing interest from a long list of major programs.
With Texas A&M and South Carolina set to meet this weekend, the Gamecocks are trying to make the matchup count in more ways than one. Ards is being recruited to take another look at his commitment, which adds a little extra intrigue to a game that already carries plenty of weight on the field. [Read more 🡒]
