Texas A&M’s run of bad injury news in the NFL just got a lot worse.
Arizona Cardinals rookie Chase Bisontis, an early second-round pick out of Texas A&M, was having a strong preseason before a game a couple of nights ago turned disastrous. Bisontis had his leg landed on awkwardly, and it immediately looked serious.
There was some hope it might turn out better than it first appeared. Texas A&M fans had seen that kind of scare before, including with Shemar Stewart, who was carted off in practice but later learned he would only miss a short stretch. But this one did not break that way.
Late yesterday, it was announced that Bisontis tore his MCL and will miss the season after needing surgery. The Cardinals then placed him on IR earlier today, which effectively ends any realistic chance of a return this year.
Bisontis becomes the second young Aggie to lose an entire season to a knee injury, joining Nic Scourton. Scourton was coming off a breakout year with the Panthers and had been hoping for a big sophomore season in the NFL, but he suffered an ACL injury on the first day of practice in Carolina and is also out for the year.
For the Cardinals, it’s a painful loss. For Texas A&M fans, it’s another gut punch in a summer that has already brought too many of them. Bisontis was the highest of four selections from last year’s Texas A&M offensive line, and he had been drawing rave reviews during the preseason.
His college career showed why. Bisontis started the very first game he played at Texas A&M, lining up at offensive tackle as a freshman because of depth issues and his own talent, then moved inside to guard for his final two seasons. He looked more natural there, dominated at guard, and entered the NFL projected as an interior lineman.
His strength has always stood out, and Tommy Moffitt can certainly attest to that. Bisontis has the kind of physical tools that made his rookie year look so promising, which is why this injury lands as such a crushing setback for everyone connected to him.
