Texas A&M Fans Have One Big Recruiting Worry Right Now

Despite Texas A&M's on-field challenges, confidence remains high that key recruit Mark Matthews will uphold his commitment to the program.

Texas A&M’s season has gone sideways, but the Aggies’ grip on their top 2027 offensive line commitment still appears intact.

Five-star tackle Mark Matthews remains central to the story around the nation’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, even as Mike Elko’s third season has unraveled. The on-field mess, driven in part by offseason decisions, has put added attention on a group of future commitments that could wind up looking very different by next year.

That includes the quarterback situation. Redshirt junior Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, is widely expected to be gone after a rough year that featured two interceptions and no touchdowns in losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP. With change likely coming on offense, Texas A&M’s 26-member 2027 class could feel the ripple effect.

Matthews, though, is not currently considered one of those shaky pieces. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., St.

Thomas Aquinas product committed to Texas A&M in May, and there is still confidence he sticks with the Aggies. He could be on campus this weekend when Texas A&M hosts The Citadel, and there’s also a possibility he heads to Miami to watch the Hurricanes face Florida State.

Four-star linebacker and Aggie commit Aston Whiteside is already expected to visit Miami this weekend, which adds another layer to the watchlist.

Even with Texas A&M stumbling, the belief around Matthews has not changed much. Aggie Yell insider Jaxson Callaway continues to trust the relationship Matthews has built with offensive line coach Adam Cushing, while Rivals insider Steve Wiltfong is also confident Matthews will make it to College Station this weekend.

“The Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St.

Thomas Aquinas product committed to Texas A&M in May and is expected back in College Station this weekend for the game against The Citadel. Similar to Jacobs, this is one Miami has worked to keep warm but to date there is no indication Matthews is wavering on his pledge to the Aggies.

We’ll see if he shows up at a game before season’s end.”

Keeping Matthews locked in remains a major priority for Elko and Cushing, along with fellow five-star offensive lineman Kennedy Brown and four-star commits Kaden Scott and DeMarrion Johnson.

Texas A&M May Have Found Something On Offense At The Right Time

A lopsided win over The Citadel gave Texas A&M a chance to clean up some offensive rhythm, and the Aggies took it. In a 41-0 non-conference victory in Week 7, Texas A&M piled up 501 yards while the defense kept The Citadel to 183 total yards, a performance that looked more like the balance the Aggies have been searching for as the schedule gets tougher.

Marcel Reed continued to settle in at quarterback, pushing his completion rate to 62 percent and connecting with Aaron Gregory for a touchdown. Jamarion Morrow added the kind of red-zone punch this offense can lean on, scoring three times in a game where the Aggies did just about everything cleanly. The bigger question now is whether this was a one-week reset or the start of something more useful for Texas A&M moving forward. [Read more 🡒]

Texas A&M Faces One Offensive Decision That Could Change Alabama Game

Texas A&M took care of business with a 41-0 win over The Citadel, but the bigger challenge is coming fast with Alabama next on the schedule. As the Aggies shift from a comfortable nonconference result to a far more demanding SEC test, one offensive question stands out: how aggressively should they lean into quarterback Marcel Reed as a runner?

Reeds ability to add value on designed running plays has become a point of interest after the recent stretch of games, and it could influence how much strain Texas A&M is able to put on Alabamas defense. The idea is still speculative, but it speaks to a broader issue for the Aggies as they look for ways to make their offense more consistent against a tougher opponent. [Read more 🡒]

Marcel Reed Just Changed The Alabama Conversation For Texas A&M

A routine win over The Citadel still offered a useful glimpse of where Texas A&Ms offense may be headed, and Marcel Reed was at the center of it. The Aggies kept the game on schedule by scoring touchdowns on every drive Reed directed in the first half, while the defense handled the triple-option side of things with a shutout that never let the afternoon get away from them.

Reed finished 8 of 13 for 130 yards and a touchdown without an interception, which only added to the sense that his passing game is settling in at the right time. With other offensive pieces contributing and Alabama next on the calendar, the decision at quarterback now carries a different kind of weight for the Aggies, and it is no longer just about who can get them through a tune-up.
