Texas A&M Faces A Real SEC Test As Pressure Builds

With pivotal games on the horizon, SEC teams like South Carolina and Alabama are shaking up the rankings as the race to the playoffs intensifies.

After a week that mostly went according to script, the SEC pecking order stayed crowded at the top and messy everywhere else. Georgia kept the No. 1 spot, South Carolina kept climbing, and a few teams near the middle are running out of runway fast.

At the bottom, Vanderbilt sits 16th after a bye in the middle of a five-game skid. The Commodores still have four SEC games left, and the best chance to get one win may come this week against a Mississippi State team that does not have a quarterback.

Arkansas checks in at No. 15 after its bye week produced only 10 points at home against Missouri. The postgame also included Eli Drinkwitz talking for too long about the lights in the stadium, which came off as complimentary but still felt a little pointed.

Auburn is 14th after hanging around with Ole Miss for a while before the Rebels finally shook off their recent funk. Alex Golesh still has some easier spots ahead, including Arkansas, Mississippi State without Kamario Taylor, and Samford before the Iron Bowl.

Mississippi State lands at No. 13, though the Bulldogs might deserve to be lower after a fourth straight loss. The concern is obvious without Kamario, and this group now feels like it’s headed nowhere after briefly getting all the way into the top 15.

Texas is next at No. 12 after allowing just three points, a number that looks great until you remember the opponent was working with a third-string quarterback. The bigger issue is the Longhorns’ injuries and their continued trouble running the ball, both of which could come back to bite them in the final four games.

Oklahoma drops to No. 11, and the tone around the Sooners is getting bleak. Their defense, usually the team’s strength, was not in great shape against South Carolina, and if that kind of effort shows up again against Florida and Ole Miss, this season could be over. Maybe firing Ben Arbuckle can spark something, but that’s where things stand now.

Texas A&M sits 10th, and the timing of South Carolina’s surge could not be worse for the Aggies. They watched the Gamecocks dismantle Oklahoma in Norman, and this matchup looks rough both statistically and in terms of current momentum.

Missouri moves up to No. 9 after handling Arkansas in efficient fashion on a very well-lit field. If the Tigers can avoid a trap against Texas this weekend, they’ll head into Athens the following week with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Tennessee is No. 8, still carrying the Alabama win but seeing the Texas loss look worse by the week. Kentucky is the next chance to land a statement result, and if the Vols can’t get that one, the season could start to unravel for a team that still looks like a fringe playoff contender.

Ole Miss comes in at No. 7 after Pete Golding’s group found its late rhythm against Auburn. That burst of offense brought some much-needed momentum before Georgia comes to town, and Trinidad Chambliss looks back to himself after a rough outing last week. Still, Kirby Smart’s defense will be a different kind of problem.

Florida is No. 6, with Buster Faulkner still standing out as one of the most innovative offensive minds around. Even so, the Gators remain a long way from Georgia’s level. Oklahoma visits next, and that should be a get-right opportunity for Jon Sumrall and company, though the playoff picture already looks dim.

LSU checks in at No. 5 after an off week spent looking ahead to Alabama. The Bayou Bengals are unbeaten at home, and if they can finish with wins over Alabama and Texas, that would mean a lot for their playoff path.

South Carolina continues its rise at No. 4. The Gamecocks are rolling in a way that looks familiar to the stretch they put together late in 2024, and if they get past Texas A&M this week, the only major test left would be Georgia at home in the penultimate weekend.

Alabama is No. 3, with one major road test left at LSU. That trip may be the toughest challenge available in the conference, but if the Crimson Tide get through it, the path to the Playoff gets much cleaner with Vanderbilt, UT-C, and Auburn still ahead.

Kentucky sits at No. 2, and the message is simple: prove it. Road games at Tennessee and Missouri will be difficult, as will home dates with Florida and Louisville, but a 3-1 finish would still be enough to keep the Wildcats in the top 12, especially with those LSU and South Carolina wins continuing to age well.

Georgia remains at No. 1 after flexing on Florida in the Invesco QQQ Gridiron Classic. The Bulldogs are still on top, but the closing stretch is anything but easy, with road trips to Ole Miss and South Carolina around a home game against Missouri.

Texas A&M Gets A Costly Chance To Reset At South Carolina

Texas A&M comes out of its bye week still searching for traction, and the timing hardly gets easier. The Aggies are unranked in the AP Top 25 and sitting at 4-4 overall with a 1-4 mark in SEC play, a record that has left little margin for error as the season reaches its stretch run.

South Carolina offers a chance to change the conversation, but it also arrives with plenty of momentum after moving into the poll at No. 23 following a recent win. With other teams shuffling around in the rankings after the latest slate, the Aggies head into Columbia facing more than just another conference road game - they are trying to turn a costly reset into something that can still salvage the back half of their season. Jimbo Fisher To Florida State Suddenly Feels Real Again

Florida States coaching search took a sharp turn after the program moved on from Mike Norvell following the loss to Clemson, and the early chatter has quickly shifted beyond the usual list of rising names. For Texas A&M fans, the most eye-catching development is the reappearance of Jimbo Fisher in the mix, with reports suggesting the former Seminoles coach has been actively lobbying for the job and talking with donors about what the program needs to get back on track.

It is an intriguing twist because Florida State is not just looking for a familiar face, it is trying to solve a modern roster-building puzzle at the same time. NIL budgets and roster management sit at the center of the conversation, and while Wake Forest coach Jake Dickert has also surfaced as a possible candidate, Fishers renewed push adds a layer of familiarity and unfinished business to a search that is still taking shape. Mike Elko Is Selling Texas A&M Hope At The Perfect Time

Texas A&Ms season has been uneven enough to test patience, but the long view around the program looks a lot different. Even with a 4-4 record and an SEC schedule that has exposed plenty of issues, the Aggies are sitting on the nations No. 1 recruiting class for 2027 according to 247Sports, a sign that the pitch around College Station is still landing with high-end prospects.

Mike Elko has pointed to communication and relationships as the backbone of that momentum, and it matters because recruiting optimism can buy time when the present is messy. The on-field product still has to catch up, especially with consistency and offensive problems hanging over the team, but for now the future is giving Texas A&M something the current season has not: real reason to believe.
