Texas A&M Defense Earns Major SEC Respect Again Under Mike Elko

Despite key player losses, Texas A&M's defensive leaders earn recognition and look to sustain their impressive performance in the SEC.

Texas A&M’s defensive reputation is getting another strong push heading into 2026, and Athlon’s latest SEC coordinator rankings show exactly where Mike Elko stands in the conference picture.

On Wednesday, Steven Lassan placed Elko and Jay Bateman at No. 2 among SEC defensive coordinators, with only Oklahoma’s Brent Venables and co-defensive coordinator Todd Bates ranked higher. It’s another nod to the work Elko has done on that side of the ball, dating back to his four seasons as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator and the head coaching opportunity he earned with the Aggies after two seasons at Duke that ended with back-to-back bowl appearances.

Elko officially took over the playcalling last fall after Bateman had handled most of those duties during the 2024 season. Once Bateman left for Kentucky to become the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator and playcaller, Elko promoted Lyle Hemphill into the coordinator role. Hemphill arrived with one season as James Madison’s defensive coordinator on his résumé, and he also spent time as Elko’s safeties coach at Duke.

The Aggies’ 2025 defense backed up the buzz. Texas A&M finished 18th nationally, led the country in third-down defense, ranked 16th in passing yards allowed and 40th against the run. The pass rush was a major weapon too, with Cashius Howell piling up an SEC-best 11.5 sacks as the Aggies totaled 43 sacks, second-most in the nation.

There’s turnover to manage now. Texas A&M lost Howell and several other key defenders to the NFL, but the portal haul gives the unit a chance to reload quickly. More than half of the 17 transfer additions are expected to start or rotate for Elko’s 2026 defense.

That group includes transfer edge Anto Saka, former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson and nose tackle CJ Mims, all of whom look like immediate contributors. With Elko calling the shots and Hemphill bringing his background in the secondary, Texas A&M has the pieces to at least match last season’s production.

Texas A&M Just Got A Preseason SEC Slot Fans Will Hate

Texas A&Ms offseason work has already drawn plenty of attention, and not all of it has been flattering. CBS Sports college hoops insider Jon Rothstein slotted the Aggies ninth in his preseason SEC power rankings for 2026-27, a spot that reflects how crowded the league is expected to be even after a busy portal haul and some important retention on the roster.

The Aggies did bring in the No. 18 transfer class, headlined by scorers PJ Haggerty, Jalen Shelley and Tyshawn Archie, while also keeping pieces like Zach Clemence and Mackenzie Mgbako. There is still plenty of schedule grind ahead with a mix of home-and-home and road SEC dates, but the bigger sting for A&M fans is how the league picture is shaping up around them, especially with Texas sitting much higher in the same conversation. These Five Aggies Will Decide If 2026 Lives Up To The Hype

Entering Mike Elkos third season, Texas A&M is carrying the kind of expectations that can make a fall feel bigger before it even starts. The Aggies have a core of players who should shape whether 2026 matches the buzz, with quarterback Marcel Reed at the center of it all and a supporting cast that includes edge rusher Anto Saka, running back Rueben Owens II, wide receiver Mario Craver and cornerback Dezz Ricks.

Reed has the clearest path to turning the hype into something real, but the rest of that group matters just as much because each one is being asked to absorb a major role. Saka arrives with a chance to help replace production up front, Craver is lined up for a bigger share of the passing game, and Ricks is positioned to steady a secondary that will need experienced voices. The biggest question may be how quickly all five settle into those jobs, because for Texas A&M, the difference between a promising season and a true breakthrough could come down to how well this group handles the pressure. Marcus Ratcliffe Is Emerging As The Face Of Texas A&M's Defense

Texas A&Ms secondary is shaping up to be one of the more interesting parts of the defense heading into 2026, and Marcus Ratcliffe sits right at the center of it. The senior safety transferred in from San Diego State and has quickly moved into the kind of role that brings both production and responsibility, with the Aggies counting on his experience to help anchor a unit that also includes Dalton Brooks and transfer Tawfiq Byard.

Ratcliffes rise has already shown up in preseason recognition, including a spot on the Lott Trophy Watchlist, and the expectation around him is only growing as camp approaches. What makes him especially important for Texas A&M is the way he can be deployed near the line of scrimmage, where his presence could make him a steady force in the run game and a central figure in how this defense sets its tone.
