Texas A&M got a welcome dose of optimism to open game week, and it started with Daymion Sanford.
Head coach Mike Elko said Monday that the Aggies’ captain linebacker is trending toward being available for the Week 1 matchup with Missouri State after a severe lower-leg injury in the spring game had put his 2026 season in doubt. Sanford required surgery, but he has been on the practice field every day since fall camp opened on August 5.
“Right now, yes,” Elko said when asked if he expects Sanford to be ready for Missouri State. “Maybe a little bit of a game-time decision. To ask me right now, I anticipate him being out there.”
Elko stopped short of a full guarantee, leaving the door open for Sanford to be a game-time decision. Even so, that’s a significant shift from where things stood in April, when many believed the injury might wipe out his season.
If Sanford does go, it would be a major boost for a Texas A&M defense that has to replace six starters. He was one of the most productive players on the unit last season, finishing fourth on the team with 57 tackles and 3½ sacks. He also added two passes defensed and an interception.
His presence matters even more now because his responsibilities in the middle of the defense have expanded after Taurean York and Scooby Williams left for NFL opportunities. Sanford is one of the three leaders on that side of the ball, and his return would give the Aggies an important stabilizing piece right away.
Elko also said Monday that he’s liked what he’s seen from the rest of the linebacker group during fall camp.
“I just think the overall growth and development of the group really sticks out,” Elko said. “Ray (Coney) has had a really, really strong summer.
I think he had a really, really strong fall camp. I think Noah Mikhail has taken a really, really big jump forward.
We're really happy with what Jordan Lockhart has done...”
For now, though, the headline is Sanford. What looked uncertain just a few months ago now appears to be pointing toward a Week 1 return.
