Texas A&M wrapped up a season that might not have ended with a win, but certainly set the stage for a promising future under first-year head coach Bucky McMillan. Despite being predicted to finish near the bottom of the SEC, the Aggies proved they could compete with some of the nation's top teams. It's a solid foundation for McMillan's tenure.
A big concern with relying heavily on the transfer portal is the potential disruption to team culture. However, McMillan and his staff managed to avoid this pitfall, fostering a strong sense of unity among the players.
This camaraderie was on full display after Texas A&M's tough loss to Houston. McMillan shared an emotional moment from the locker room during the post-game press conference.
Reflecting on the Houston game, McMillan said:
"We're very thankful to this group. I'm telling you, you were in that locker room, you saw all the tears in that locker room- that usually happens when you have a team, more like Houston, that brings back a lot of guys.
Or maybe a group like last year's A&M team, that had a lot of guys that played together for years. We had no returners, virtually, and those guys came together for 8 or 9 months from all over the world and they're crying their eyes out because it meant so much to them.
That means something's right. They didn't want it to be over with."
Those words highlight the powerful bond this team formed in a short time. Despite the disappointing end, the Aggies have built a strong foundation under McMillan.
Looking ahead, there will be significant roster changes as many players reach the end of their eligibility. Yet, with McMillan steering the ship, the culture seems to be in good hands.
Texas A&M will return next season, aiming to climb even higher in the rankings. The future certainly looks bright for the Aggies.
