Texas A&M is finally in game week, and the Aggies’ preseason tune-up has given fans plenty to chew on before Saturday night’s opener against Missouri State.
The biggest feel-good development comes with senior linebacker Daymion Sanford. He suffered a brutal fibula injury during the Maroon & White Game and was expected to miss at least half of the 2026 season. But three months into his recovery, Sanford appeared at SEC Media Days without a boot, and both he and coach Mike Elko sounded confident an early return was on the way.
That progress has carried into fall camp. In the Aggies’ nearly 20-minute preseason video, “The Foundation - a story of fall camp,” Sanford looks close to fully healed, especially when it comes to lower-body strength. The video tracks the recovery process in a way that makes just how serious the injury was feel even more remarkable.
Marcel Reed is another major storyline as he enters his second full season as Texas A&M’s starter. After throwing for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Reed spent the offseason working to clean up mechanical issues and cut down on mental mistakes. Based on two scrimmages, there’s been encouraging progress: his deep ball accuracy has improved, and defenders have been quick to notice his command.
Cornerback and projected starting nickel Jordan Shaw was among those praising Reed’s decision-making and control of the offense.
There’s also real intrigue in the linebacker group behind Sanford. Transfer Ray Coney, junior Jordan Lockhart and sophomore Noah Mikhail are part of a rotation that new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill said was “without a doubt” the unit that surprised him most.
