Texas A&M heads into its Week 10 bye with the same uneasy feeling that has followed the Aggies for much of this season: there’s time to reset, but not much evidence yet that the problems are going away.
The break comes at a useful moment. Mike Elko said Wednesday on the SEC Teleconference that senior quarterback Marcel Reed will stay in the starting role, and the staff is using the week to get as healthy as possible before a four-game stretch that will demand more from the roster. Reed has thrown eight touchdowns and eight interceptions through eight games, while freshman running back KJ Edwards has become the offense’s lone clear bright spot after taking over as the starter.
There has been no movement with the coaching staff or depth chart from Monday through Friday, though that could change by next week. For now, Elko’s focus is on sorting through the issues on both sides of the ball and building a plan that gives the Aggies a chance to win each of their remaining games.
The outlook, at least from ESPN FPI, is bleak. Texas A&M is not projected to win another game, a forecast that matches the way this season has looked far too often. The Aggies need more focus, more physicality, and a lot less of what has shown up on the sideline when they’ve been trailing by double digits.
Health-wise, Texas A&M appears to be in decent shape entering the next week. After the loss to Alabama, the Aggies did not pick up any new injuries, aside from the players already out for the year. Still, like every team at this point in the season, the starters on both sides of the ball are banged up and could use the full two weeks of rest.
The bye also arrives with questions swirling around Elko. The short answer on his job security is no, he is not on the hot seat.
But the seat is getting warmer. His recent comment about Texas A&M’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class showed how badly he wants to hold onto that group after four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside flipped to Miami.
Aggies Wire previously detailed Elko’s contract after his extension late last year and compared it with Jimbo Fisher’s disastrous deal. Texas A&M would still have some protection if it decided to move on from Elko over the next two seasons.
The loss at Alabama offered a familiar mix of promise and frustration. Reed opened with interception problems, but he also led two touchdown drives early.
After that, the Crimson Tide took control, outscoring the Aggies 14-0 the rest of the way outside of one successful second-half drive. Reed never settled back in, and the offense never found another rhythm.
Now the Aggies get extra time before heading to South Carolina, where they’ll face a defense that has been inconsistent and a quarterback in LaNorris Sellers who can be as physical as he is difficult to predict. Texas A&M’s defense has been up and down all season, and that matchup adds another layer of pressure to a team already searching for answers.
Texas A&M plays South Carolina in Columbia on Nov. 7.
Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. CT, and the game will air on ESPN.

Mississippi State Is Forced Into A Texas QB Move That Matters To A&M
Mississippi States quarterback situation took another turn this week when Kamario Taylor was ruled out for the rest of the season with turf toe, leaving the Bulldogs to pivot again as they prepare for No. 11 Texas. Senior AJ Swann will get the start, stepping in after previously working as a backup and bringing a winding college path that has included stops at Vanderbilt, LSU and Appalachian State.
For Texas A&M, the move matters because Mississippi States offense now has a different look heading into a game that can ripple through the SEC race. Swann replaces freshman Parker Puckett at the top of the depth chart, and the Bulldogs will be asking a veteran reserve to steady things against a ranked opponent in a matchup that could have downstream implications for teams watching the standings closely. Texas A&M Just Got A Big Recruiting Boost At Linebacker
Texas A&Ms 2027 recruiting class took a brief hit when four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside flipped to Miami, but the bigger picture in College Station still looks strong. The Aggies remain No. 1 in the national class rankings, and the linebacker haul continues to give the staff plenty to sell as the cycle moves forward.
Kaden Henderson is a big part of that momentum. The five-star linebacker turned in a standout performance in a recent high school game and is expected to push for a starting role once he gets to Texas A&M, which only adds to the anticipation around his arrival. He also confirmed he will be in town for the Aggies Nov. 14 game against Tennessee, a visit that should give him another close look at the program he may soon help anchor. [Read more 🡒]
Texas A&M Bye Week Puts Mike Elko On The Spot
Texas A&M heads into the bye week at 4-4 after a 31-20 loss to Alabama, and the break arrives with a familiar set of questions hanging over the program. The passing game never found much rhythm against the Crimson Tide, and early interceptions helped put the Aggies in a hole before the offense faded again late, with no fourth-quarter scoring to show for it.
Mike Elko now has two weeks to sort through the issues that have kept Texas A&M from finding more consistency on offense and in game management. The next chance to show progress comes against South Carolina, where the Aggies will be judged less by the bye-week message and more by whether the passing game looks steadier and the late-game execution finally improves.
