The Broncos are hoping Taurean York’s Denver story isn’t over just yet.
York, the former Texas A&M linebacker, was waived Sunday, according to Chris Tomasson, as NFL roster churn continues in the wake of cut-down day. Denver would like to bring him back on the practice squad if he clears waivers, but first he has to pass through the waiver wire before the Broncos can re-sign him.
It’s a familiar squeeze for teams this time of year. Players who are waived don’t become free agents right away the way vested veterans do, which means clubs have to wait and see whether the players they cut can make it through unclaimed.
York’s release is notable because of how much Denver invested in bringing him in. He got a $25,000 signing bonus, the biggest among the Broncos’ undrafted free agents, a clear sign the team saw real value in him during camp.
And he gave them a reason to keep watching. York put together a solid preseason, finishing with four tackles and showing the kind of instincts and competitiveness that stood out during his college career.
The odds are steep for any undrafted player. About 15% of UDFAs make an initial 53-man roster, and roughly 25% end up on a practice squad. Most never get into a regular-season game at all.
York has been fighting uphill for a while, and this is just the latest hurdle. If he clears waivers, Denver gets another chance to keep his progress going on the practice squad.
