Mississippi State is making a quarterback change for Saturday night’s trip to Texas, and the move comes with the Bulldogs staring down one of the toughest defensive tests in the country.
According to CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz, senior backup AJ Swann is expected to get the nod against the No. 11 Longhorns in Austin. The decision comes after star sophomore Kamario Taylor was officially ruled out for the rest of the season earlier this week because of turf toe, leaving Jeff Lebby and his staff to reshuffle the depth chart under center.
“It’s been trending toward Mississippi State starting AJ Swann at quarterback today against No. 11 Texas, sources tell @CBSSports.

Swann brings plenty of experience with him. He started his college career at Vanderbilt in 2022 and was steady over 12 starts across two seasons with the Commodores. He then transferred to LSU in 2024, where he backed up Garrett Nussmeier, before turning in another solid season at Appalachian State in 2025.
The switch also bumps freshman Parker “Billy” Puckett back down the pecking order. Puckett had stepped in for Taylor after winning the backup job over Swann in fall camp, but his performances against LSU and Oklahoma didn’t hold up, opening the door for Swann to take over.
Now the Bulldogs are asking Swann to handle what could be the best defensive front in college football, in front of a full SEC crowd and under the lights in primetime.

Texas A&M Just Got A Big Recruiting Boost At Linebacker
Texas A&Ms 2027 recruiting class took a brief hit when four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside flipped to Miami, but the bigger picture in College Station still looks strong. The Aggies remain No. 1 in the national class rankings, and the linebacker haul continues to give the staff plenty to sell as the cycle moves forward.
Kaden Henderson is a big part of that momentum. The five-star linebacker turned in a standout performance in a recent high school game and is expected to push for a starting role once he gets to Texas A&M, which only adds to the anticipation around his arrival. He also confirmed he will be in town for the Aggies Nov. 14 game against Tennessee, a visit that should give him another close look at the program he may soon help anchor. [Read more 🡒]
Texas A&M Bye Week Puts One Frustrating Question Front And Center
Texas A&M is using its Week 10 bye the way most good teams hope to use one, by getting healthier and taking a hard look at what has worked and what still needs cleaning up. Mike Elko said the Aggies are spending the week resting players and evaluating performance as they turn toward a Nov. 7 meeting with South Carolina, a stretch that should tell them a lot about where they stand heading into the final push.
Marcel Reed remains the starter, which at least settles one part of the conversation, even if his play has left some room for debate. For Texas A&M, the bye is less about a reset than a chance to sharpen the game plan and get the offense and the rest of the roster in better shape before the schedule tightens again. [Read more 🡒]
Texas A&M Bye Week Puts Mike Elko On The Spot
Texas A&M heads into the bye week at 4-4 after a 31-20 loss to Alabama, and the break arrives with a familiar set of questions hanging over the program. The passing game never found much rhythm against the Crimson Tide, and early interceptions helped put the Aggies in a hole before the offense faded again late, with no fourth-quarter scoring to show for it.
Mike Elko now has two weeks to sort through the issues that have kept Texas A&M from finding more consistency on offense and in game management. The next chance to show progress comes against South Carolina, where the Aggies will be judged less by the bye-week message and more by whether the passing game looks steadier and the late-game execution finally improves.
