Mike Elko Faces A Marcel Reed Decision Aggies Fans Dread

Despite a shaky start, benching Marcel Reed could do more harm than good for Texas A&M's quarterback situation.

Texas A&M’s 3-3 start has pushed plenty of fans to the same conclusion: Marcel Reed should sit. After six games, it’s easy to understand why the noise is loud. Reed has been, by and large, the worst quarterback in the conference so far this season, and when you fold in the final two games of last year, the trend line looks ugly.

But a change now would be the wrong call.

That’s the hard truth for Mike Elko and the Aggies. Reed has been underwhelming, and his confidence may already be in a rough place. Still, if the conversation is about what helps Texas A&M right now and what helps the program down the road, pulling him at this moment doesn’t solve much.

The simplest reason is also the biggest one: there isn’t a better option sitting in the room. Elko deserves blame for the broader situation, too, because the decision was made not to prioritize another quarterback in the portal. That leaves Texas A&M with Brady Hart and Helaman Casuga behind Reed, along with Miles O'Neill over in Chapel Hill.

Hart is a redshirt freshman, but he’s also just 18 after graduating a year early. Casuga is equally inexperienced. Tossing one of them into the starting job would mean handing the offense to a player who is still extremely raw in a unit that already has problems well beyond quarterback.

And that matters, because developing a young quarterback is not just about getting him on the field. He has to be put in a spot where he can actually succeed. That confidence can vanish in a hurry, and there may be no faster way to damage it than to make a first conference start on the road against Alabama behind a leaky offensive line.

Reed’s own arc is part of the warning here. The version Texas A&M is seeing now is not the same player from last year, and the mental strain at the position has clearly changed him. The upside in Hart or Casuga could look a lot less convincing if they’re forced into action before they’re ready.

The next two weeks offer Reed a chance to steady things. Texas A&M gets the Citadel this weekend, then heads to Tuscaloosa. No one is expecting Reed to suddenly rediscover everything as soon as he walks into Bryant-Denny, but that stretch at least gets the Aggies to the bye.

That off week is the point where everything can be reevaluated. The offensive staff being retooled, position battles opening back up - that’s when a quarterback decision makes the most sense. If Texas A&M is going to make a change, it should happen then, giving Hart or Casuga as much time as possible to settle in before the final stretch.

There’s still real upside in this offense, and a workable passing game would unlock a lot of it. But if that’s the goal, benching Reed right now is not the answer.

Let him take these next two weeks, then revisit it at the bye if necessary. Otherwise, Texas A&M risks stunting the growth of the entire quarterback room.

Mike Elko Just Made A Defensive Change Aggies Needed To See

Texas A&M is making a notable adjustment on defense, with Mike Elko handing play-calling duties to defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill so he can stay more focused on the broader game-management side of things. It is the kind of midseason shift that usually says something about urgency, and in this case it comes after the Aggies have struggled in recent games and needed a clearer path toward steadier play.

Hemphill already held the coordinator title, but now he will have more control during games after working in previous stops at James Madison, Duke and Wake Forest. For Elko, the move is about sharpening the operation on game day and giving the defense a different kind of leadership touch, with Texas A&M hoping the change helps reset a unit that has not been where it needs to be. Texas A&M Faces A QB Decision That Could Shift The Offense

Texas A&M heads into its final non-conference game against The Citadel with the most important question on the roster centered under center. Marcel Reed has struggled to find his rhythm, and the Aggies are now weighing whether Brady Hart deserves a chance to guide the offense as the calendar turns toward a more demanding stretch.

Mike Elko has not tipped his hand on any quarterback switch, which leaves Saturday feeling like a proving ground as much as a tune-up. For a team still searching for offensive stability, the game offers a chance to see whether sticking with Reed makes sense or whether a change could give the Aggies a different spark before the schedule stiffens. Texas A&M's Rough Start Just Put One Costly Reality In Play

Texas A&Ms uneven start has already pushed Mike Elko into an uncomfortable spotlight, with the Aggies sitting at 3-3 after the loss to Missouri and the offense still trying to find anything close to steady footing. The concerns are broad but familiar: quarterback play has been inconsistent, the offensive line has struggled to hold up, and the whole operation has looked more fragile than anyone around the program expected by this point.

Elkos contract situation only adds another layer to the pressure, since he signed a six-year extension in February 2023 and the buyout terms if he were fired without cause are part of the conversation now. For a program that expects to contend, the on-field issues are bad enough on their own, but they become even more significant when every stumble invites a look at the financial reality attached to making a change.
