Texas A&M fans may be ready to move on from Marcel Reed, but Mike Elko is staying put for a simple reason: there isn’t a better option waiting behind him.
That was the reality after the LSU loss, and it was the same story again this week. Reed turned in another rough outing in Death Valley, yet Elko’s stance didn’t change. Marcel Reed remains the starter.
It’s easy to read that as stubbornness. Some around College Station are already drawing a line to the final years of Jimbo Fisher’s tenure, when faith in the system never seemed to budge even as the results fell apart.
And from the outside, that comparison makes sense. When something has worked, coaches can be slow to admit it has stopped working.
There’s another explanation too: support. Quarterback is a brutal position, and the mental side can snowball fast.
Elko said as much last week, believing Reed was dealing with those kinds of issues. His teammates have echoed that backing throughout the week.
But the bigger truth is more straightforward. Reed may be struggling badly compared to what Texas A&M knows he can do, but the Aggies do not have a backup who looks ready to step in and raise the level of the offense.
That became harder to ignore when Brady Hart entered and almost immediately threw an interception. Hart was a major recruiting win over Michigan, but he is still extremely young. He had a late birthday for his class, reclassified up a year, and is only now 18 even though he has already spent a year on campus.
Texas A&M’s depth chart at the position was always going to be a gamble. With Miles O’Neill leaving for UNC through the portal, the Aggies chose not to add another transfer quarterback and instead rolled with the room they had. At the time, that carried risk because Reed’s dual-threat style and body type always leave injury concerns in the background, and the lack of experience behind him was obvious.
Now that decision looks even more costly. Reed’s problems are not the only ones on the team, and there are issues showing up in other places too. But his struggles are the most obvious, and they are the ones fans see every snap.
If Elko believed a backup could give Texas A&M a better chance, he would already have made the switch. Instead, the offseason choice to avoid adding another quarterback is now hanging over the staff. No matter how unexpected Reed’s slide has been, the Aggies passed on insurance.
So unless injury forces the issue or Hart or Casuga makes a major leap, Reed appears headed to finish the season as the starter. He could still find what he lost and settle in. But if this level of play continues, even a bowl game starts to look difficult for Texas A&M.
