Texas A&M’s path back to the College Football Playoff starts with Marcel Reed, and the conversation around the redshirt junior quarterback is pretty straightforward: the Aggies need the next version of him.
Reed is coming off a career year, but the finish left a mark. Texas A&M rolled to an 11-0 start before the season unraveled in the final two games, beginning with a 27-17 loss to rival Texas on the road after the Aggies led at halftime. Then came a 10-3 loss to eventual national runner-up Miami in the first round of the CFP, a game that featured Reed’s roughest outing of the year and two interceptions.
Even with that late stumble, Reed’s production was hard to ignore. He threw for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while adding nearly 500 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. Under new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch, the expectation is that his trajectory keeps moving up.
That’s part of why On3’s Chris Low still slotted Reed at No. 7 in his latest SEC quarterback rankings as the offseason winds down. With transfer additions reshaping the league’s quarterback picture, Reed remains in the mix among the conference’s best, even if the names ahead of him carry more buzz.
Low’s evaluation laid out both sides of Reed’s game clearly: “The scouting report on Marcel Reed is a mixed bag. He’s had some major highs with a few lows sprinkled in going back to his first meaningful action in the Texas Bowl as a redshirt freshman in 2023.
Reed, a redshirt junior, is right there at the top in SEC experience among quarterbacks with 27 appearances and 21 starts. Reed passed for 3,169 yards and rushed for 493 yards last season.
He finished with 25 touchdown passes and six touchdown runs. He’s an outstanding creator and has a lot going for him, including playoff experience.
Where Reed can take it to the next level is by becoming a more consistent passer. His 12 interceptions last season tied for the second most in the SEC, four of those in the Aggies’ two losses against Texas and Miami to close the season.
The two interceptions against the Longhorns both came in the fourth quarter. Even so, the jump Reed made in his second season as a starter suggests there’s another one coming in 2026, and Texas A&M coach Mike Elko said Reed has a much better understanding of what it takes to be a quarterback in the SEC.
Reed will be working under a new offensive coordinator after Collin Klein left to take the Kansas State head job. Holman Wiggins was promoted from receivers coach to replace Klein.”
That last part matters. Texas A&M is asking Reed to sharpen the details - accuracy, touch, and decision-making when the game tightens up - because the Aggies already know he can create plays and pile up numbers. The next step is turning that talent into cleaner finishes, especially when the pressure rises late in the season.

Mike Elko's SEC Ranking Will Fire Up Texas A&M Fans
Texas A&M heads into the 2026 season with some real momentum behind Mike Elko, who is entering his third year in College Station after signing a six-year extension. The Aggies open against Missouri State on Sept. 5, and the roster around him already looks different after another active transfer-portal cycle and a strong NFL draft showing from former players, both of which have helped reinforce the idea that the program is moving in the right direction.
Elkos growing national profile is only adding to the buzz. Analysts around the sport have started to place him near the top of the SEC coaching hierarchy, and Texas A&M is also in position to make noise on the recruiting trail with its 2027 class tracking toward elite territory. For a fan base that has waited for sustained traction, the combination of coaching respect, roster churn and recruiting momentum is the kind of backdrop that makes the next step feel increasingly important. Texas A&M Is Headed For A Huge Identity Test After Marcel Reed
Marcel Reed gives Texas A&M something every program wants at quarterback: a clear starting point and, for now, a steady hand. With two seasons of eligibility left, Reed has time to keep shaping the offense and the Aggies have time to keep building around him, but the larger question is what comes after him and how much of the rosters identity will need to be redefined once that chapter closes.
Brady Hart, Helaman Casuga and Jayce Johnson are all part of the conversation about the next quarterback, which only underscores how unsettled that future still is. The same kind of long-view planning is happening on defense, where sophomore edge rusher Marco Jones is expected to take on a bigger role in 2026 after showing growth under the staff, even as Anto Saka and TJ Searcy remain in line for major pass-rush work. LSU Suddenly Has Real Tension In Battle For Elite 2027 Back
The race for Landen Williams-Callis has tightened into a short list of heavy hitters, and Texas A&M is still part of the conversation for one of the top running back prospects in the 2027 class. The four-star back has already taken official visits to LSU and Texas A&M, while also making unofficial stops at SMU and Oregon, giving the Aggies a real chance to stay in the hunt against the usual national powers.
Williams-Callis has built a profile that has made him one of the more closely watched backs in his class, and the next stretch of his recruitment figures to matter. For A&M, the appeal is obvious: landing an elite runner this early would give the program a major head start, but the competition is now down to a handful of schools and the pressure is only going to rise from here.
