Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed made sure there was no mystery about how he feels heading into the Longhorns showdown.
With the Aggies preparing to host Missouri State this weekend, Reed still found time to take a direct shot at Texas in a recent interview with USA Today. His message was blunt, and it centered on the fact that Texas has beaten A&M in back-to-back seasons.
"We don’t like Texas," Reed said with conviction. "I don’t like Texas.
It sucks that we’ve lost to them twice. But they’re coming here this year, so they’re gonna have to pay.
I’ve got something for them, for sure."
That kind of talk is exactly the sort of thing that will travel fast in Austin, and it gives Texas plenty of extra motivation for the regular-season finale at Kyle Field on Nov. 27.
The matchup already had juice before Reed opened his mouth. Texas enters the season ranked No. 5 in the preseason AP Top 25, while Texas A&M is right behind at No.
- Both teams are viewed as national-title caliber groups, which only adds to the anticipation around a late-November game that already had plenty of attention.
Reed’s frustration also traces directly to last year’s meeting, when Texas handled A&M 27-17. In that game, Arch Manning threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and also scored once on the ground. Reed, meanwhile, struggled to get much going, finishing without a touchdown and throwing two interceptions.
Now Reed is clearly carrying that performance with him into this season, and he has chosen to say it out loud. Whether it was smart or not, it gives Texas a clean dose of bulletin-board material and puts even more pressure on Reed to back up the words when the teams meet again in late November.
