Texas A&M is still a few days away from opening the season against Missouri State in College Station, but Marcel Reed has already put the Longhorns on notice.
The Aggies’ quarterback did not hold back when he spoke to USA Today Sports in April, making clear how he feels about Texas and what he expects when the rivalry game arrives in College Station later this year.
“I hate the color orange,” Marcel Reed told USA Today in April. “The colors just look so ugly.
Everywhere you go (in Austin), you see that color orange. Burnt orange?
Who likes burnt orange? Texas, it’s the rival, bro.
You gotta hate them.... We don’t like Texas.
I don’t like Texas. It sucks that we’ve lost to them twice.
But they’re coming here this year, so they’re gonna have to pay. I’ve got something for them, for sure.”
That kind of talk lands differently when the results haven’t gone your way. Texas has beaten Texas A&M in each of the last two seasons and, in both cases, the Aggies’ SEC Championship hopes were shut down. One loss came in College Station, the other in Austin, and both were double-digit defeats.
Reed has been at the center of those struggles. In two starts against Texas, he has thrown for 326 yards and three interceptions, with no offensive touchdowns in either game.
His passing efficiency rating against the Longhorns sits at 104.3, which is his lowest against any FBS opponent. Texas is also one of only two teams that have kept him out of the end zone entirely, along with Miami in last season’s CFP Round 1 loss.
So the challenge is obvious. If Texas A&M is going to climb to the level it wants, it has to break that pattern against the Longhorns, and Reed is the one carrying that responsibility.
Texas enters the season with one of the nation’s top rosters and is projected by many to get back to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game. But the Longhorns are not the only team that has upgraded.
The Aggies have reshaped plenty of their own roster, overhauling the wide receiver room, both lines, and the secondary. Reed also has a new offensive coordinator in Holmon Wiggins, who should, in theory, put him in a system that fits him better.
There is also plenty of buzz out of fall camp that Reed has taken a real step forward. Reports from camp suggest he’s processing the position better, throwing with improved accuracy and ball placement, and protecting the football at a higher rate.
If that carries over into the season, Texas A&M’s offense could become a tough problem for anybody, Texas included.
And this year, Reed will get that shot at Kyle Field at night, with more than 100,000 fans behind him.
If he plans to stand behind what he said in April, that game is where he’ll have to prove it.
