Texas A&M’s 2026 path is already taking shape around Marcel Reed, and the first shot across the bow came before a snap has been played. The Aggies quarterback was left off the SEC’s preseason quarterback list, with Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss, Texas’ Arch Manning and Georgia’s Gunner Stockton taking those spots instead.
That omission doesn’t erase what Reed helped Texas A&M do last season. The Aggies just finished one of the best years in program history, and Reed was a huge reason why. But the snub also makes the next step pretty clear: he has to go out and prove the media wrong.
There is at least some logic behind the decision. Reed didn’t deliver his best football when Texas A&M needed it most, and the losses to Texas and Miami included four combined interceptions. Still, that late-season finish can overshadow how strong his first nine games were, along with the second half against South Carolina, when he was playing like a legitimate Heisman Trophy finalist.
Preseason lists only matter so much anyway. What matters now is what Reed and the Aggies do when the games count, and the target is obvious. After back-to-back seasons of falling one game short of the SEC Championship Game, Texas A&M is chasing a trip to Atlanta.
That would be a major milestone for Reed, even before any talk of winning the league title. Getting Texas A&M to its first-ever SEC title game would be a statement in itself, and it would also be the cleanest way to answer the doubters who passed him over.
If the Aggies make it to Atlanta, they would almost certainly be on the doorstep of the College Football Playoff, if not already in it. Texas A&M has already checked off a CFP appearance, but the next step is bigger: an SEC championship run and whatever comes after that.
If Texas A&M falls short of reaching the conference title game and winning a College Football Playoff game, the season could be judged harshly. And because Reed is the quarterback, that criticism would land squarely on him and head coach Mike Elko.
