Texas A&M’s path back to the College Football Playoff runs straight through Marcel Reed, and the biggest question around the Aggies this offseason is simple: can the redshirt junior quarterback finally turn his talent into week-to-week reliability?
Reed already showed what the ceiling looks like last fall. He set career highs with 3,169 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, but he also threw 12 interceptions, a reminder that the production came with plenty of volatility. That up-and-down profile is exactly why his development has become such a focal point for Texas A&M heading into 2025.
The coaching changes around him only sharpen that spotlight. Offensive coordinator Collin Klein, a 2025 Broyles Award nominee, left after two seasons calling plays to become Kansas State’s head coach.
In his place, veteran wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins was elevated to OC even though he has no play-calling experience. Joey Lynch was also promoted as the new quarterbacks coach, giving Reed a different voice in his ear as he tries to clean up the rough edges in his game.
Those rough edges showed up in the biggest moments. Reed’s four interceptions in Texas A&M’s two losses last season - against Texas at the end of the regular season and Miami in the first round of the CFP - were part of the “mental mistakes” he’ll need to erase if the Aggies are going to make a real run. Against top-35 defenses, he completed only 59% of his passes and threw six touchdowns with eight of his 12 interceptions, a stat line that captures just how uneven he was against better competition.
That inconsistency is why On3’s Andy Staples used one word to describe him when asked by Crain & Cone: “unpredictable.” Staples used more flattering language for the other SEC quarterbacks mentioned, with “make-or-break” reserved for South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers.
Even so, Reed has help around him. Texas A&M’s receiver group is deep, with Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel-Roman, Terry Bussey, and Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, who brings needed size at 6'4". That gives Reed a chance to match last season’s passing numbers, if not push beyond them.
The big unknown is the line in front of him. Texas A&M has four new starters up front, and that makes pass protection one of the key variables in whether Reed can take the next step the Aggies are counting on.
