Marcel Reed’s name kept surfacing at SEC Media Days on Monday, and not just because Texas A&M’s quarterback is the kind of player who can tilt a season.
Reed is already the most important piece for the Aggies heading into 2026, but the conversation around him has only gotten louder after a rough finish to last season. He was showing up on Heisman lists before that final game, then a poor outing in a nationally televised rivalry matchup knocked him off that track. Even so, his profile has kept climbing.
That rise is easy to understand. Reed is now two years into the starting job at Texas A&M and has already led the Aggies to the playoff last year. Around the SEC, and beyond it, people know exactly who No. 10 is now.
What stood out on the first day of SEC Media Days was how often Reed came up from people outside the Texas A&M camp. The Aggies themselves won’t be in Tampa until Wednesday, but their quarterback was already a talking point.
Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz was among the first to bring him up, singling Reed out as one of the top players on Texas A&M’s roster.

That praise carries some weight because Reed was central to Texas A&M’s win over Missouri last season in Columbia, and the Aggies have to make that trip again in 2026. The passing game was shaky in the first half, but once Reed got more involved as a runner after halftime, the game started to swing Texas A&M’s way.
Drinkwitz’s comments were one thing. The more unexpected nod came from Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who talked about getting to know Reed during the offseason.

Reed also drew notice as one of the standouts at the Manning Passing Academy, according to draft scouts and other observers, and that reputation apparently carried over off the field too. He’s picking up respect from coaches and players across the league, not just from the people inside his own program.
For Texas A&M, that kind of recognition matters. It’s been a while since the Aggies had a quarterback who commanded this level of attention and respect, with Kellen Mond the last one to do it. Reed seems to be in that same conversation now, and that’s a good sign for an Aggies team heading into a crucial 2026 season.

Elko also pointed to the pieces that should help define the next step, especially the secondary, the return of key players and the depth up front on the offensive and defensive lines. Jay Batemans move to Kentucky has put his name back in front of Texas A&M fans, and not exactly in a way that invites nostalgia. The former Aggies defensive coordinator left College Station with plenty of frustration attached to his tenure, where his coaching and defensive approach drew heavy criticism from a fan base that never fully bought in.
So it stood out when Kentucky coach Will Stein went public with his support for the hire, sounding confident about Bateman stepping into the defensive coordinator role. For Aggie fans, that kind of praise is hard to square with what they saw in College Station, especially after the issues that lingered around the defense there and the memory of a much stronger stop earlier in Batemans career. Paul Finebaum Just Weighed In On Greg Sankey's SEC Power Play
Greg Sankeys comments at SEC Media Days landed as more than routine commissioner speak, and that matters in a league like the SEC, where every hint of leverage gets dissected. He said the conversations about the conference potentially separating from the NCAA are real, tying them to frustration that has built up among coaches, players and athletic directors, while also pointing to the SECs history of regulating itself more aggressively than some of its peers.
Paul Finebaum read the message as a warning shot aimed squarely at the NCAA, a signal that the SEC wants action before it considers any bigger move.
