Marcel Reed is on the verge of a Texas A&M milestone, even if the 2026 season hasn’t gone the way anyone around College Station expected.
The Aggies quarterback has not matched the standard he set with last year’s breakout stretch. His decision-making has been shaky, the big-play spark has been missing, and Texas A&M sits at .500 as a result. Still, Reed gets a chance this weekend against South Carolina to put his name alongside some of the program’s most recognizable quarterbacks.
He enters the game with 49 passing touchdowns. One more would move him into a small and elite club of Aggie passers who have reached 50 or more touchdowns in their Texas A&M careers. The only names already in that group are Kellen Mond, Jerrod Johnson and Johnny Manziel.
Reed has had plenty of help getting this far. Last season, KC Concepcion and Mario Craver gave him a dangerous pair of targets, with Concepcion catching nine of Reed’s touchdown passes in his lone year in College Station and Craver adding seven of his own. Since Reed took over as the starter in late 2024, they’ve been his top two options.
Mond’s place in the program’s record book is hard to miss. The San Antonio native took over after Nick Starkel was injured in the first game of the 2017 season and became the full-time starter in 2018. He finished his A&M career as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards with 9,661, total offensive yards with 11,269 and passing touchdowns with 71.
He also brought a dual-threat element to the position, becoming the third SEC quarterback after Tim Tebow and Dak Prescott to post 9,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards. In 2018, he helped lead the Aggies to an 8-4 record, highlighted by the 74-72 seven-overtime win over LSU at Kyle Field.
That season also featured Trayveon Williams setting the school’s single-season rushing record with 1,760 yards. Mond’s final year in 2020 ended with Texas A&M at 9-1 and ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25, just short of the four-team College Football Playoff.
Johnson’s run at A&M came from 2006 to 2010, when he played for Dennis Franchione and Mike Sherman and had Jovorskie Lane behind him, the school’s all-time rushing touchdowns leader with 49. Johnson ranks second in program history behind Mond in passing yards with 8,011 and passing touchdowns with 67.
His biggest statistical season came in 2009, when he threw for 3,579 yards. He also entered his final season as a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate, but accuracy issues and a lack of zip on his throws led to him being benched for Ryan Tannehill after three straight losses.
Ryan Swope and Jeff Fuller were his top receiving threats, and both remain the school’s top two all-time leaders in receiving yards.
Manziel’s two-year burst remains one of the most electric stretches Texas A&M has ever seen. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner set the school’s single-season records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in 2013 with 4,114 and 37. He also owns the program record for total touchdowns in a season with 47 from his Heisman year, and he shares the all-time mark for total touchdowns at A&M with Mond at 93.
With Mike Evans helping power the offense, Manziel guided the Aggies to a 20-6 record over his two seasons. That run included the win at No. 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2012, the 41-13 win over Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl that same year, and the comeback victory over Duke in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Reed’s season may not have lived up to expectations, but one touchdown pass would still put him in rare company. And if Texas A&M can beat South Carolina, it would give the Aggies a much-needed boost along with that place in history.

Mike Elko Just Framed Texas A&Ms Final Four Games Differently
Mike Elko used his weekly media appearance to put Texas A&Ms season in plain terms, acknowledging the Aggies have not lived up to the expectations that surrounded them before kickoff. At 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play, the margin for comfort is gone, and the issues have been hard to miss, from Marcel Reeds regression at quarterback to the broader struggles on both sides of the ball.
Even so, Elko made clear there is still something left to chase in the final stretch. With four games remaining, the Aggies are not just trying to salvage a record, but to show some progress after a season that has not matched the preseason buzz. How they respond now will say plenty about where this program stands heading into the finish. [Read more 🡒]
Nebraska Volleyball Just Took A Recruiting Hit Fans Wont Ignore
Kendall Omoruyis recruiting move gives Texas A&M another notable addition to a program that just reached the sports summit. The top volleyball prospect had been committed to Nebraska, but she announced she is now headed to College Station, pointing to personal growth and her faith as part of the decision while also thanking Nebraskas coaching staff for their role in her journey.
For the Aggies, the timing only adds to the appeal. Coming off the programs first national championship, Texas A&M is already building around a strong middle blocker group, and Omoruyi fits right into that picture as another high-end piece for the future. Nebraska, meanwhile, is left to regroup after losing a commitment it had spent time developing, a reminder of how quickly the recruiting board can shift in a sport where elite talent changes the outlook fast. South Carolina Could Hit Texas A&M With A Bigger Loss Saturday
Recruiting season rarely slows down just because a game week arrives, and Texas A&M is seeing that play out with one of its top defensive pledges. Frederick Ards III, a four-star edge rusher in the 2027 class, remains committed to the Aggies, but he has also recently visited South Carolina while drawing interest from a long list of major programs.
With Texas A&M and South Carolina set to meet this weekend, the Gamecocks are trying to make the matchup count in more ways than one. Ards is being recruited to take another look at his commitment, which adds a little extra intrigue to a game that already carries plenty of weight on the field. [Read more 🡒]
