Texas A&M’s hopes for 2026 start, and probably end, with Marcel Reed.
The Aggies are coming off a second season under Mike Elko that left the program with real momentum, and the expectation now is clear: keep climbing and push into the group of SEC teams everyone has to circle. That puts the spotlight squarely on Reed, the quarterback who has become the face of the program and the engine for everything Texas A&M wants to do.
Reed is heading into his second year as the Aggies’ starter, but this offseason brought a new voice inside his helmet. Holmon Wiggins took over as offensive coordinator after serving as Texas A&M’s wide receivers coach in 2025, following the departure of former assistant Collin Klein. And from the start of fall camp, Wiggins has liked what he’s seen from his quarterback.
"I think for him, he has stayed steady," Wiggins said. "The biggest thing for us was making those consistent improvements and daily deposits that he can make. So he's up there studying and getting extra film; he's up there trying to understand exactly what we're asking him to do in the game plan and what's in the system."
That work matters because Reed already proved plenty last season. In his first full campaign as Texas A&M’s starter, he helped the Aggies go 11-2 and reach the College Football Playoff. He also settled into the offense quickly enough to emerge as a Heisman Trophy contender late in the year, especially during Texas A&M’s 11-0 run down the stretch.
Reed finished 2025 with 3,169 passing yards and 31 total touchdowns, while completing 62.1 percent of his throws. Now he has to make the transition to a new play-caller, even if the overall structure of the offense is expected to stay largely the same.
Wiggins said the staff is working to build around Reed rather than force him into something else.
"We're trying to tailor everything to his skill set," Wiggins said. "Now you see him doing some stuff and actually taking more command of the offense because there's more understanding of what it is, and a lot of that comes with experience and also time on the job, so he's continuing to build confidence through our practices."
That command comes with experience. Reed is entering his fourth season of college football and has 21 starts on his résumé, a track record that should matter as Texas A&M tries to take the next step in 2026.
The Aggies have talent around him, but the bottom line is simple: their ceiling is tied to Reed. If his offseason growth carries over and he keeps building on what he already showed, Texas A&M will be a difficult team to deal with.
