Mike Elko isn’t backing away from Marcel Reed after Texas A&M’s stumble against Kentucky.
The Aggies were supposed to roll into this weekend’s showdown with LSU still unbeaten. Instead, they’re 2-1 after a frustrating loss to the Wildcats, and Reed’s performance was a big reason why. The quarterback finished 26 of 49 for 236 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, completing just 53.1% of his throws.
Even with that rough afternoon fresh in the rearview, Elko made his stance clear ahead of the LSU game.
“I have a lot of confidence in Marcel,” Elko told reporters. “I believe in Marcel, and Marcel is our quarterback.”

That confidence isn’t universal. Around the fan base, opinions are split.
Some supporters see Reed’s flaws and want Texas A&M to make a change, while others think the better path is to adjust the offense around him. There’s also the obvious issue hanging over all of it: there doesn’t appear to be a clear alternative ready to take over as QB1.

There is at least one detail working in Reed’s favor: he’s already shown he can produce against LSU. Last season in Baton Rouge, he totaled 310 yards and four touchdowns in Texas A&M’s 49-25 win over the Tigers. He also threw two interceptions in that game, so the margin for error remains thin.
Texas A&M will need a cleaner night from Reed this time around. The Aggies face LSU on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on ABC.
