With Joey Aguilar's eligibility denied by a Knoxville judge, Tennessee's QB outlook for 2026 took an unexpected twist. Heupel addressed the competition among three hopefuls vying to fill Aguilar’s shoes.
Leading the drills was George MacIntyre, followed by the highly-touted 5-star freshman, Faizon Brandon. Rounding out the trio was Colorado transfer Ryan Staub.
Heupel made it clear: the quarterback spot is wide open. "Yeah, it is open," he confirmed. "We discussed this with all of them at the start of winter and reiterated it before spring ball."
Heupel emphasized that this QB battle is a marathon, not a sprint. "Don’t expect a decision during spring ball," he noted. "It's crucial for these guys to learn and grow, revisit their progress over the summer, and return ready to compete in training camp."
