Texas A&M’s defense could get a major boost today, but the answer on Daymion Sanford is still hanging right up until kickoff.
The Aggies linebacker has not played a snap this season, even though his recovery from a spring-game injury has moved faster than expected. Sanford dressed last week against Missouri State and still didn’t get on the field, and now he’s back in the same spot heading into the matchup with Arizona State: a game-time decision, according to On3.
The report came after Sanford’s summer remained mostly quiet publicly, though some optimism started to build when he traveled to Tampa with Mike Elko and Marcel Reed for SEC Media Days. Elko’s comments around that time only added to that feeling, with the coach repeatedly saying he expected Sanford to have a huge year for the maroon and white.
The injury itself turned out to be a broken fibula, not a soft-tissue issue, which helped explain why Sanford’s timetable shifted so dramatically from the early panic that followed the spring-game injury. At the time, plenty of fans feared something far more serious.
If Sanford is able to go, the timing matters. Arizona State under Kenny Dillingham leans on a heavy RPO offense, one that tries to force defenders into bad reads and make Elko’s defense “wrong” no matter how it reacts. That puts a premium on Texas A&M’s linebackers, and Sanford brings the kind of speed, power and experience that can help hold that structure together.
Elko is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the country at designing answers for an attack like that, but schemes only work when the right players are available to execute them. Sanford’s ability to get where he needs to be, and even cover for mistakes with his athleticism, is a big part of why his return would matter so much.
Texas A&M did get solid work from Noah Mikhail and Ray Coney against Missouri State, with the Aggies allowing just 67 yards of offense in that game. So the defense isn’t helpless without Sanford. Still, with a trip to Death Valley coming soon, getting him back into the rotation and up to speed would be a big deal.
His status will be updated closer to kickoff. For now, Sanford remains the name to watch.
