Anastasia Potapova’s US Open win over Amanda Anisimova was supposed to be the story. Instead, a post-match gesture captured on live TV took over the conversation.
Potapova knocked off the American 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to move into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. After the handshake at the net, she celebrated with the crowd. Then cameras caught what looked like a sarcastic wave in Anisimova’s direction, and the clip quickly spread across social media.
Fans were not shy about what they thought they saw. One wrote, “Tell me that Potapova didn’t just do what I think I saw her do, that would be a total lack of respect.”
Another posted, “I’ve rewatched it a few times and can’t imagine it being anything other than Potapova rudely waving and saying ‘bye bye’ to Anisimova.” A third questioned the moment more broadly, writing, “Is this behavior typical of Potapova?
I understand the moment getting to you but don’t think there’s much excuse for this.”
Anisimova did not linger. She went straight off the court as the reaction online kept building.
The loss was a frustrating one for Anisimova, who had chances throughout the match but converted just three of her 16 break-point opportunities. Potapova was far more efficient, taking six of eight break points to match her best Grand Slam result by reaching the fourth round.
Now representing Austria, the Russian-born Potapova will next face No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva, the French Open champion.
For Anisimova, the defeat adds to a rough stretch at the majors. She came into the tournament after a strong run at the biggest events in recent seasons, reaching the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2025, where Aryna Sabalenka beat her in the Flushing Meadows final.
She also made the Australian Open quarterfinals. But Saturday’s result marked another early exit, as she has now lost in the third round at each of the last three majors this year.
