Tennessee’s defensive front has been making noise all season, but Xavier Gilliam is the one drawing the loudest buzz. The junior defensive lineman has become the centerpiece of an unselfish group, and opposing offenses have taken notice. He’s been disruptive enough to force double teams, which has opened things up for everyone else around him.
That production is showing up on the national draft radar, too. On Friday, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. released his latest Big Board for the 2027 NFL Draft, and Gilliam checked in at No.
- The Penn State transfer has put together a strong first season with Tennessee, posting 25 tackles, 6.0 sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, 24 pressures, 10 run stops, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups in eight games.
“No player in college football has improved his draft stock more since the start of the season than Gilliam, starting with a three-sack outing against Furman to begin the campaign,” Kiper wrote. “He has been terrific in his first season with the Vols after following defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and transferring from Penn State.
He is incredibly quick and explosive at the snap, and he generates a ton of interior pressure as a result. For a defensive tackle to go early in the draft, he must be consistently disruptive.
Gilliam checks that box.”
That first-step burst is the trait that jumps out immediately. On some snaps, Gilliam is in the backfield before the quarterback even has time to settle in. But he doesn’t see that quickness as the end goal.
“Well, really, a lot of people are just worried about the get-off,” Gilliam told me in an Oct. 13 media availability. “But I would say worry more about what’s after the get-off.
Keeping that motor going. Not just worrying about getting off the rock, but let me get off and go do something.”
The numbers back up that approach. His pressures and tackles for loss aren’t coming from speed alone; he’s finishing plays, not just starting them. That’s the difference between a good get-off and a disruptive defender who keeps wrecking possessions.
Tennessee defensive line coach Rodney Garner has seen enough to know what Gilliam brings beyond the stat sheet. During an Oct. 6 media availability, Garner praised both the player and the person.
“X is doing a tremendous job,” Garner said. “Obviously, he’s a joy to coach.
Anytime you can have a talented young man that’s also of the high character that he is, that wants to receive coaching. I mean, even though he’s been in our program only six months, this guy’s totally bought in.
“He is definitely going to be a tremendous VFL. And like I tell everybody, he’s one of the best ones I’ve ever had, not just from a talent standpoint, but just from an overall character and everything that he brings to the table. So he’s a joy to coach, along with the entire room.”
Kiper’s ranking also makes Gilliam the highest-rated defensive lineman on the board. If he declares in the spring, it’s hard to see him falling out of the first round.
For Tennessee, the payoff has already been obvious. For an NFL team, the reward could be even bigger.

Ex-Vol Jaylen Carey Suddenly Faces Uncertain Status For Tennessee Return
Jaylen Careys path back to Tennessee is suddenly looking a lot less straightforward. The former Vols forward, now at Missouri, has been indefinitely suspended by head coach Dennis Gates for a violation of team rules, leaving his status in limbo before the 2026-27 season even gets going.
Carey spent one season in Knoxville before transferring, so any potential return to the court would have carried some extra attention from Tennessee fans. For now, though, Missouri has not provided a timeline for when he might be back, and it remains unclear whether he will suit up again at all. [Read more 🡒]
Jason Witten Just Landed A Huge Midseason Test At Oklahoma
Oklahoma has made a midseason shakeup on offense, turning to a familiar football name in Jason Witten after parting ways with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. The move puts the former NFL tight end in charge of the Sooners offense for the rest of the season, with head coach Brent Venables saying the change was made to try to lift a unit that has struggled to produce in SEC play.
For Tennessee, it adds another layer to a conference matchup that already carried plenty of weight. The Sooners have been near the bottom of the league in offensive production, and Witten now inherits the challenge of trying to steady things quickly in the middle of the season. It is a significant test for a coach still early in this role, and one that could shape how Oklahomas offense looks the rest of the way. [Read more 🡒]
Tennessee Now Waits On A 4-Star Decision That Could Shape 2028
A key recruiting decision is coming into focus for Tennessee, and it involves one of the more promising young linebackers in the 2028 class. Skylar Alston, a four-star prospect from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, is expected to announce his college commitment on Nov. 8, with the Vols still firmly in the mix after extending a scholarship and staying engaged through multiple visits and recruiting events.
His list of finalists is a crowded one, with North Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee and UCLA all still in the hunt. For Tennessee, landing Alston would be another sign that its recruiting reach is holding strong well beyond its immediate footprint, but for now the Vols are left waiting as the decision date approaches and the picture begins to narrow.
