David Cutcliffe didn’t need long Monday afternoon to make his opinion on Jim Knowles clear.
The former Tennessee offensive coordinator, who also led programs at Ole Miss and Duke, called Tennessee’s first-year defensive coordinator “a superstar” while speaking to the Knoxville Quarterback Club. Cutcliffe has hired Knowles at both of his head-coaching stops, and he said there’s a reason the two worked together for a combined nine years.
“Jimmy Knowles is a superstar,” Cutcliffe told the Knoxville Quarterback Club. “I hired him at Ole Miss, couldn't pay him enough money and lost him.
I hired him again at Duke, got every dime I could get, couldn't pay him enough money, lost him again. Every time I lost him, I'd get my butt fired.
That's what happened.”
Knowles was on Cutcliffe’s Ole Miss staff in 2003 as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator before leaving in 2004 to become head coach at Cornell, his alma mater. Cutcliffe later brought him back as defensive coordinator at Duke in 2010, and Knowles stayed there through 2017 before moving on to Oklahoma State.
Tennessee hired Knowles in December to replace Tim Banks, bringing in a coach who was already viewed around the country as one of the best in the business. Knowles helped Ohio State win a national championship in 2024 and then spent last season at Penn State.
Cutcliffe said Knowles’ appeal goes beyond scheme.
“Jim Knowles is brilliant and he's down-to-earth,” Cutcliffe said. “He is a Philadelphia cop's son, raised in the row house.
Smart as he could be - went to Ivy League, Cornell as a student, played football. Got out, went to New York and made all that money in finance - was brilliant.
“Wanted into coaching, which I'm so glad he did. I've had more fun recruiting [with him].
When Jim and I'd go up east recruiting, I mean, it was like a history exam. And then every staff meeting I had with the staff, we always do - and this came from [former Tennessee] coach [Johnny] Majors - a fact of the day.
“But when Knowles was on the staff, he's so creative, he made up the fact of the day. And I would let him do it. It was about as far from a damn fact as anything you've ever heard, but it sure was entertaining.”
For Tennessee, the early returns have been encouraging. Through three games against non-conference opponents, the Vols are ranked No. 26 nationally in scoring defense and sit third nationally with 13 sacks heading into Saturday’s SEC opener against top-ranked Texas.
