Tennessees Quarterback Decision Just Got A Lot More Complicated

As the Tennessee Vols prepare for a crucial matchup against Kentucky, the quarterback controversy between Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre heats up, with both proving their worth for the starting position.

Tennessee’s quarterback question is still wide open heading into the bye week, and both Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre have put enough on tape to make the decision a tricky one for Josh Heupel.

Brandon opened the season as the starter, taking the first five games before MacIntyre stepped in during the first half against Auburn. Since then, MacIntyre has started the last three games, turning what once looked like a settled job into a weekly conversation.

There’s also been some belief around Brandon that the reason he hasn’t been back under center is tied to his recovery from injury. With Tennessee off this week, Heupel and his staff have extra time to sort through it before a matchup with a top-10 Kentucky team.

Brandon’s case starts with pedigree and early production. He was a five-star recruit in the 2026 class, and Heupel picked him after months of offseason competition.

That trust showed up right away. Brandon helped Tennessee get off to a 3-0 start and was especially sharp in his first career start against Furman, when he accounted for five touchdowns.

His first real challenge came against Texas, and that game brought a much rougher line. Brandon was slow out of the gate and left the contest in the second quarter because of an injury. He still battled back and finished 17 of 29 for 146 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.

The box score didn’t make his night look great, and plenty of people were disappointed. But there’s more to the story than the numbers alone.

He was a true freshman facing the No. 1 team in the country in his first real test, and Tennessee’s protection didn’t exactly make life easy. Colin Simmons had five sacks by himself.

Add in the injury issue, and Brandon still nearly helped Tennessee pull off a comeback.

That injury carried into the next week, and he was benched against Auburn while still dealing with it.

Even with the missed time, Brandon’s numbers still compare favorably in a couple of key areas. He has thrown seven touchdown passes to MacIntyre’s two, and his one interception stands against MacIntyre’s three.

MacIntyre, though, has built his own strong argument. A local kid who grew up rooting for the Vols, he finally got his chance when he replaced Brandon against Auburn. He didn’t just hold the line from there - he helped Tennessee beat Auburn, then followed that up with wins over Arkansas and Alabama.

His run ended with a loss last Saturday against South Carolina, but he has already shown he can handle the job. MacIntyre has also been the more accurate passer, completing 67% of his throws compared to Brandon’s 60.4%.

So the decision comes down to what Tennessee values most right now: Brandon’s bigger touchdown production and lower interception total, or MacIntyre’s steadier accuracy and growing comfort in the role.

The bye week gives Heupel time to sort it out, but the debate is very much alive.

Lady Vols Showed Off A Depth Tennessee Fans Will Notice Fast

The only exhibition game on Tennessees schedule offered an early look at how many different ways this Lady Vols roster can beat you, and Florida A&M had no answer for it. Tennessee rolled to a 132-63 win while forcing 37 turnovers and turning those takeaways into 45 points, the kind of pressure-to-points formula that can make a deep team even harder to handle once the games start to count.

Eight players finished in double figures, a sign that the scoring load could be spread around in a way Tennessee fans are likely to appreciate fast. White filled the box score with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals, Minus added 12 points and seven rebounds, Smikle led the way with 19 points, and Janneh controlled the glass with 13 rebounds, giving the Lady Vols a glimpse of the balance they can lean on this season. DeSean Bishop Update Matters For Tennessees Stretch Run

DeSean Bishops day at South Carolina ended early, but Tennessee got a reassuring sign afterward. Josh Heupel said the running back is expected to be in good condition for the upcoming week, which matters as the Volunteers head into the stretch run with Bishop playing a bigger and bigger role in the offense.

Bishop has been pushing toward 1,000 rushing yards this season, and his presence gives Tennessee another reliable option as the games get tighter. With one year of eligibility still left after this season, keeping him available now and down the stretch looms as an important piece of the bigger picture for the Volunteers. [Read more 🡒]

Vols Suddenly Have A Real Shot At Key 2027 DB Target

Preston Glascos recruitment is moving into the home stretch, and Tennessee has positioned itself squarely in the mix for one of the more intriguing 2027 defensive backs in the region. The Grayson High School cornerback from Georgia is expected to make his college choice soon, and his list has been trimmed to Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee after a process that has already brought multiple scholarship offers and steady attention from major programs.

For the Vols, the encouraging part is that Glasco has remained in regular contact with the coaching staff and came away from a recent visit with Tennessee firmly in the conversation. That kind of late momentum matters in a battle like this, especially when the competition includes two heavyweight SEC neighbors, and it leaves Tennessee with a real opening as his decision approaches.
